To enhance the continuity of WIC's current breastfeeding management and counseling efforts; assists in teaching the advantages and management of normal breastfeeding; distribute and promote breastfeeding information to pregnant and breastfeeding women; counsel women about problems they encounter and continuing breastfeeding while at work or school.
Job Duties: Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and United States executed under the authority of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act. Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor. Teaches Classes (or assists in teaching classes) on the advantages of breastfeeding and the management of normal breastfeeding experiences. Distributes breastfeeding information and promotes breastfeeding in the clinic area. Provides information and promotes breastfeeding to WIC participants. Corrects misinformation and addresses specific concerns of expectant mothers. Counsels pregnant and breastfeeding mothers on a one-to-one basis to help new mothers to avoid common breastfeeding problems. Receives a caseload of WIC clients and makes routine periodic contacts with all clients assigned. Respects each client by keeping her information strictly confidential. Counsels new mothers in the hospital and follow-up counseling over the phone when necessary. Documents and keeps accurate records of all counseling and contacts made with WIC clients. Supports women during a normal breastfeeding experience. Identifies and makes appropriate referrals of breastfeeding that is not normal. Attends monthly staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate. Reads assigned books and materials on breastfeeding provided by the supervisor. Teaches use, cleaning and assembly of breast pumps and expression and storage of human milk. Assists WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding through special project and duties as assigned. Other duties may be assigned.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications: EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or six months related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
Six months experience in a related field.
COMPUTER SKILLS
An individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating. Driving is necessary for home and clinic visits with WIC participants.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Employee must not and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG’s Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA’s List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG’s List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
