DAY TO DAY AS A ADULT DAY SUPPORT COUNSELOR - MH

As a Full-Time Adult Day Support Counselor at Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing the lives of individuals with serious mental or emotional impairments. This multifaceted position involves providing essential support in areas such as independent living skills training, vocational coaching, and crisis intervention. You will conduct needs assessments and develop tailored case management plans, ensuring clients receive the resources they require.

Your expertise in principles and techniques of assessment will be crucial for influencing treatment planning and facilitating individual and group psycho-social development sessions. You will also engage clients in recreational and leisure activities, monitor their progress, and advocate for their rights, contributing to their overall health and safety. As a backup intake worker, you'll facilitate client intakes and follow up with those in need, making a significant impact on community reintegration and personal development.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR IN A ADULT DAY SUPPORT COUNSELOR - MH

To excel as a Full-Time Adult Day Support Counselor - MH at Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, candidates must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, such as Social Work, Psychology, or Counseling, paired with at least one year of experience in providing psychosocial development training, crisis intervention, counseling, and case management to individuals with mental impairments. A solid understanding of assessment principles and crisis intervention techniques is essential for effectively managing client needs and developing tailored treatment plans. Knowledge of American Sign Language is preferred, enhancing communication with diverse clients. Additionally, a valid Virginia Driver's License is required. Successful applicants must be registered with the Board of Counseling as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) or as a QMHP-Trainee within the first 30 days of employment.

Strong organizational, advocacy, and interpersonal skills will enable you to foster meaningful connections and drive positive outcomes for your clients.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • Bachelor's degree in human services (such as Social Work, Psychology or Counseling)
  • One (1) year of experience providing psychosocial development training crisis intervention counseling and case management to the mentally impaired.
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language preferred.
  • Must be registered with the Board of Counseling to practice as a QMHP or register with the Board of Counseling to practice as a QMHP-Trainee within the first 30 days of employment.
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License
