Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Substance Abuse Counselor to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in behavioral health and addiction counseling, demonstrating a commitment to helping individuals overcome substance use disorders. This role requires a blend of clinical skills, empathy, and the ability to work collaboratively with patients and their families. The Substance Abuse Counselor will provide individual and group therapy, conduct assessments, and develop treatment plans tailored to each client's needs.
Duties
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments to evaluate substance use issues and mental health conditions.
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on diagnostic evaluations and patient needs.
- Provide individual and group counseling sessions utilizing various therapeutic techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and crisis intervention.
- Facilitate group therapy sessions that promote recovery and support among peers.
- Maintain accurate medical documentation in compliance with HIPAA regulations, including intake forms, progress notes, and treatment plans.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive patient care, including case management and referrals to additional services as needed.
- Engage in crisis management strategies to support patients during critical moments.
- Utilize research-based practices in addiction medicine and behavioral health to inform treatment approaches.
- Document patient progress and outcomes using appropriate coding systems such as ICD-9, ICD-10, and CPT coding.
- Provide education on substance abuse issues to patients and their families, fostering understanding of the recovery process.
Requirements
- A degree in social work, psychology, or a related field is required; relevant certifications in addiction counseling are preferred.
- Experience in psychotherapy, crisis intervention, child & family counseling, or home & community care is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with PTSD care, behavioral therapy techniques, applied behavior analysis, and mental health counseling is essential.
- Strong skills in patient assessment, case management, and individual/group counseling are necessary for success in this role.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and experience with medical records management are important for maintaining accurate documentation.
- Ability to engage effectively with diverse populations while demonstrating cultural competence.
- Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing; ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
