Organizational Unit Overview

The primary mission of the College of Nursing, Academic Support and Counseling Center ( CON ASCC ) is to maximize the academic success, personal development, and graduation of all nursing students. Additionally, the ASCC provides services to intended nursing students on a variety of topics related to academic success, personal development, and admission to the CON . The CON ASCC also serves as a change agent and as a resource for addressing issues of student culture, development, and engagement. A specific goal of the CON ASCC is to improve the nursing student learning experience and the graduation rate of admitted nursing students.

Job Duties

This is for a 12-month, non-faculty at-will position.

50% Academic and Personal Counseling:

Provide academic and personal counseling, mental health crisis intervention, psychoeducation, and consultations in individual and group formats. The academic counselor serves all declared undergraduate and graduate nursing majors enrolled in classes online or face-to-face. Psycho-educational programs and academic services will focus on improving the student’s stress and anxiety management, test-taking and study skills, interpersonal relationships, and overall academic and personal development to promote student support, engagement, retention, and success. In addition, the academic counselor may provide referrals to campus and community resources.

15% Counseling:

Provide walk-in mental health crisis intervention services including consultation, evaluation, counseling, referral, and follow-up.

15% Student Development:

Work cooperatively with university colleagues to provide psycho-education, programs, and services designed to facilitate student development.

10% Consulting and Supervision:

Provide students, faculty, and staff consultations and provide supervision for peer tutors, peer mentors, and graduate assistants (GAs).

10% Other Duties:

Perform other duties as assigned (i.e. orientation activities, professional development, university committees, teaching NURS 3005, graduation, etc.)

Contingent upon availability of funds.

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Psychology, or appropriate mental health field.
  • Knowledge of trends, theories, and effective models in college counseling and student development.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues in the area of counseling.
  • Proficient in oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience in counseling documentation, public speaking, and leadership.
  • Experience in assessing and intervening in a wide range of academic and psychological concerns.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

North Carolina licensure as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Psychologist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, or Clinical Social Worker or eligibility for state licensure and/or certification in a respective professional field.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Direct counseling experience in higher education is preferred.
  • Experience with study skills and test-taking skills.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in, counseling, outreach programming, academic coaching, evaluation, and consulting.
  • Demonstrated computer skills and experience with university technology (MS Office, WebEx, Banner, Canvas, Qualtrics, Graphic design, etc.).
  • Commitment to a proactive student development perspective involving an active relationship with the College of Nursing.
  • A self-directed team player prepared to handle a busy caseload with the ability to manage multiple tasks. Interest, ability, and skills to work professionally and effectively with various populations of college students, faculty, and staff.
