Genetics Counselor
Full-time, Monday - Friday. Variable hours: 8:00 am - 6:30 pm
Summary:
Provide genetic counseling to patients, perform risk assessment for various genetic diseases. Provide verbal and written reports to physicians.
Responsibilities:
- Genetic Counseling: Take full family and medical histories and document in patient's record. Counsel patients for specific indications as per protocols. Follow-up as needed (interpret results of testing).
- Coordination of Services: Arrange follow-up services after amniocentesis or other lab work. Record and report results to all parties. Participate in lab meetings to discuss abnormal results. Discuss cases periodically with physician supervisor.
- Education and Research: Research pertinent medical information for patients and physicians; medical records, medical journals. Attend rounds at Norwalk Hospital or other cancer centers. Attend at least one conference per year. Assist with planning educational in-services.
- Doctor/Patient Communication: Draft clear, informative letters and chart notes to document in person counseling and follow-up. Do phone consults on specific genetic risk giving to medical staff.
- Promotion and marketing: Draft letters and other material updating physicians we serve about genetic issues and new testing. Design brochures for physicians' offices, etc. Promote program to community (i.e.: health fairs, etc.).
- Special Projects: Initiate and complete two projects per year to enhance our service and or patient care.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position.
Qualifications:
- M.S. in Genetic Counseling and zero to six months experience required; one to two years of experience preferred.
- Board Certification by the American College of Medical Genetics preferred.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
Working Conditions:
Manual: Little or no manual skills/motor coord & finger dexterity
Occupational: Little or no potential for occupational risk
Physical Effort: Sedentary/light effort. May exert up to 10 lbs. force
