    Qualifications

    • Required Qualifications:
    • Master’s Degree in School Counseling or Counseling Psychology from an accredited institution
    • Valid West Virginia Professional Student Support Certificate for School Counseling (PreK–Adult)
    • Minimum of five (5) years of successful experience as a school counselor in K–12 settings
    • Demonstrated experience in leadership, program coordination, or mentoring in a school or a district setting
    • Expertise in counseling frameworks, crisis intervention, student development, and academic advising
    • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skill
    • Proven ability to lead with equity, empathy, and integrity
    • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Advanced certification, training, or endorsements (e.g., LPC, LSW, trauma-informed care, PBIS, MTSS, Educational Leadership Certificate)
    • Experience with school improvement planning, federal program coordination, or mental health partnerships
    • Familiarity with student information systems, counseling software, and data analytics tools
    • Experience coordinating crisis response and student safety protocols at the school or district level

    Responsibilities

    • Leadership and Coordination
    • Lead the planning, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the district’s comprehensive school counseling program.
    • Ensure alignment with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model and West Virginia Department of Education’s School Counseling Model.
    • Promote the integration of counseling services into school improvement planning and student support initiatives.
    • Collaborate with school and district leaders to embed counseling services into MTSS, PBIS, SEL, and other whole-child frameworks.
    • Mentorship and Support for School Counselor
    • Provide professional guidance, mentoring, and instructional support to school counselors across all schools.
    • Facilitate regular meetings, professional learning communities (PLCs), and professional development for the counseling team.
    • Assist principals and central office staff in the recruitment, induction, and professional growth of counselors.
    • Model best practices in ethical decision-making, student advocacy, and counseling strategies.
    • Program Evaluation and Data-Driven Practices
    • Collect, analyze, and report data on attendance, behavior, mental health referrals, academic performance, graduation rates, college/career readiness, and counseling interventions.
    • Develop annual reports and program audits that demonstrate the impact of counseling services and support school accountability efforts.
    • Support school counselors in using data to identify student needs, target interventions, and evaluate outcomes.
    • Collaboration and Communication
    • Serve as the primary liaison between the counseling department and district administration, the Board of Education, community agencies, and higher education partners.
    • Advocate for the role of school counselors in fostering student achievement, well-being, and access to opportunities
    • Represent the district on committees, workgroups, and task forces related to mental health, academic success, and college/career readiness.
    • Build partnerships with mental health agencies, workforce development groups, and colleges/universities to expand services and post-secondary pathways.
    • Crisis Response and Student Services Support
    • Coordinate district-wide crisis response and provide leadership during critical incidents (e.g., grief, suicide risk, threat assessment, natural disasters).
    • Provide support to school-based teams during high-need situations involving trauma, emotional distress, acute student needs, truancy, or safety.
    • Develop and maintain district protocols for referral, intervention, and follow-up services.
    • Compliance and Accountability
    • Ensure counseling programs are compliant with state and federal laws, FERPA, IDEA, and Section 504 regulations.
    • Monitor adherence to ethical standards and promote confidentiality in all counseling practices.
    • Oversee documentation practices, student recordkeeping, and secure data reporting across counseling programs.
    • Professional Development and Innovation
    • Identify emerging trends in school counseling, mental health, and student development.
    • Lead initiatives related to counselor effectiveness, trauma-informed care, social-emotional learning, and career readiness.
    • Plan and facilitate district-wide training in collaboration with school leaders and community experts.
    • Working Conditions:
    • Work is performed in both central office and school settings, with frequent travel between school sites.
    • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for meetings, crises, or district events.
    • The role requires high levels of confidentiality, emotional intelligence, and professional discretion.
    • Performance Evaluation:
    • Performance will be evaluated annually by the Director of Student Support Services or Superintendent in accordance with Board policy and based on effectiveness in leadership, collaboration, program impact, and compliance.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned by district or school administration in alignment with the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program and district priorities. This may include participation in special projects, district-level initiatives, and collaboration across departments to support student success and well-being.
