The Staten Island YMCA Counseling Service is seeking a qualified Prevention Counselor who will be responsible for the implementation and documentation of Evidence-Based Programs, as well as providing care to a designated caseload, including provision of individual, group, and family counseling.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver Evidence-Based Program curriculum on and off-site.
  • Conduct screenings and assessments to determine the appropriate level of care, treatment planning, and discharge planning.
  • Membership: facilitation of sessions, including group, individual, family, crisis intervention, and referrals.
  • Fiscal Management: attendance management, census administration, retention of cases, family support, fee collection, and outreach presentations.
  • Coordination of care for designated caseload: completing ongoing reporting, outreach, referrals, and dialogue with professionals working with the caseload.
  • Maintain superior Quality Assurance & Program Quality: contract and regulation compliance, fulfilling clinical standards and best practices.
  • Maintain all related documentation for evidence-based programming, clinical sessions, and prevention counseling sessions.
  • Professional development: Participation in team meetings, individual and group supervision.
  • When appropriate, serves as the Task Supervisor to interns, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Facilitate, attend scheduled meetings, and maintain communications between our organization and other involved agencies in regard to early intervention programming.
  • Assist the supervisor with inputting required documentation into WITNYS.
  • Assist the supervisor in coordinating appropriate services for onsite evidence-based programs and other prevention counseling services.

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • BA/CASAC/BSW in Psychology/Social Science with addiction curriculum required. MSW/MHC preferred
  • Experience working with children and families.
  • Education/art background, child development, and/or substance abuse counseling experience required.
  • Knowledge of the developmental stages of a child’s physical, emotional, and cognitive development.
  • Knowledge of family systems and the impact of substance abuse. Substance abuse education and knowledge of the 12-step philosophy.
  • Skills in the planning process, oriented art projects, and providing a stimulating group environment.
  • Ability to relate to children and adults.
  • Strong organizational skills to help with planning and successfully implementing group ideas.
