About Job

Position Overview:
The part time Peer Support Specialist plays a vital role in the Permanent Supportive Housing program by leveraging lived experiences to provide support, encouragement, and guidance to individuals experiencing homelessness or housing instability. This position is designed for individuals who have successfully navigated similar challenges and can empower clients on their journey toward recovery and stability.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Peer Support:
  • Provide empathetic peer support to clients through shared experiences, fostering trust and connection.
  • Utilize personal experiences to inspire hope and demonstrate recovery possibilities.

2. Individual and Group Support:
  • Facilitate one-on-one sessions and group support meetings to encourage open dialogue among clients.
  • Lead workshops on topics related to recovery, self-advocacy, and life skills development.

3. Resource Navigation:
  • Assist clients in identifying and accessing community resources, including healthcare, mental health services, housing assistance, and employment programs.
  • Help clients build skills to navigate social services and support systems effectively.
4. Crisis Intervention:
  • Provide immediate support during crises, offering emotional support and intervention as needed.
  • Help clients create crisis plans and identify coping strategies.

5. Documentation and Reporting:
  • Maintain accurate records of client interactions, progress, and support provided, adhering to program policies.
  • Prepare necessary reports regarding client participation and outcomes.

6. Team Collaboration:
  • Work closely with case managers, healthcare providers, and community organizations to ensure comprehensive support for clients.
  • Participate in team meetings, case reviews, and training to improve service delivery.

7. Community Engagement:
  • Cultivate a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages clients to engage and participate actively.
  • Promote awareness of the PSH program within the community and advocate for client needs.

Qualifications:
  • Experience: Lived experience with homelessness, housing instability, or mental health/substance use issues, with a focus on recovery and stability
  • Education/Training: High school diploma or equivalent preferred; additional training or certification in peer support or related fields is a plus.
  • Skills: Strong communication, listening, and interpersonal skills. Ability to inspire and motivate others.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of mental health and substance use disorders, trauma-informed care, and community resources.
  • Certifications: Peer support certification (if available) is preferred; CPR/First Aid certification is a plus.
  • Other: Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation, as travel may be required for outreach.
