The Residential Counselor must be committed to a long-range philosophy of helping kids grow up healthy with values conductive to successful living. Such a commitment essentially means that we possess the values we attempt to teach the adolescent. We are, in short, stable individuals who can role model successful adults and, more importantly, successful adolescents. We must possess integrity, a natural liking for adolescents, a sense of humor, a desire for growth and a willingness to be open with feelings and thoughts.
- Possess, develop and enhance counseling skills, active listening skills and crisis intervention techniques.
- Understand fully and display knowledge of rules, citizenship program and general policies of agency by delivering fair rewards and consequences.
- Obtain knowledge of resident case histories to provide individualized treatment as needed.
- Assist residents with staying on task to complete routine, attend vocational, educational and social obligations as well as development of adequate activities of daily living, such as hygiene, mental and physical self-care.
- Take part in treatment-planning process, communicating insights and observations.
- Give nurturance, acceptance, and consistency in delivering rewards and consequences.
- Attending all required staff meeting, on-time, presentable and engaged.
- Work with Administration to ensure fulfillment of all required in-service training hours.
- Greeting visitors, checking them in and out when taking a resident off campus.
- Maintain current records of all documents necessary for employment files.
- Work as a team with other Residential Counselors while seeking guidance from the lead shift Supervisor.
- Completion of at least 40-hours of training annually to remain versed in the latest changes or updates to relevant residential and childcare topics.
- Counted into state mandated ratios, must remain working in shift until relieved by another staff member.
Qualifications:
- Associates degree in Human Services-related field, bachelor’s degree preferred.
- 2+ years of professional experience and/or experience working with protective service involved youth.
- Are at least 21 years of age, per state licensing requirements.
- Strong skills in leadership, communication, conflict management, therapeutic intervention and problem solving.
- Possess a great deal of patience and compassion for children from hard places.
- A passion and drive to provide quality and ethical services to persons served.
- Professional standards in documentation and outward presentation in representation of Webster House and its mission.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Per diem
Pay: $20.00 - $21.00 per hour
