About Job

Position Summary

The Counseling Associate/Group Facilitator is a master’s-level mental health professional responsible for facilitating support groups and providing direct counseling services to individuals affected by cancer at Cancer Support Community – California Central Coast (CSC-CCC). This role fosters connection among participants, helping them reduce isolation and stress, regain a sense of control, and find hope as they navigate the challenges of cancer.

Additionally, Counseling Associates/Group Facilitators may conduct educational workshops, lead program classes, and represent CSC-CCC’s mission and values to the broader community. Services include individual, couples, family, child/teen, and grief counseling, as well as orientation interviews. Sessions may be provided in person, via phone, or through secure virtual teletherapy platforms.

The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with the Program Director, Clinical Supervisor, and other staff to support the emotional and social well-being of CSC-CCC participants. This includes assisting with program setup and other essential tasks to ensure smooth operations. The Counseling Associate/Group Facilitator should demonstrate warmth, compassion, and professionalism while upholding the highest ethical standards in psychosocial oncology care.

Key Responsibilities

I. Support Group Facilitation

  • Lead support groups using the CSC support group model, helping participants share their experiences and gain knowledge in a safe, welcoming environment.
  • Continuously refine facilitation skills through regular clinical supervision and training.
  • Provide expertise in psychosocial aspects of cancer care across all stages, from diagnosis to survivorship, without acting as a medical expert.
  • Maintain communication with group members through phone, mail, or email as needed.
  • Accurately document attendance, incidents, and assessments related to group sessions.
  • Submit required reports and timesheets promptly.

II. Direct Counseling Services & Program Support

  • Provide direct counseling services, including individual, couples, family, child/teen, and grief counseling, through in-person, phone, or teletherapy sessions.
  • Conduct new participant orientations, distress screenings, and Individual Support Plans (ISP) as assigned.
  • Support CSC-CCC’s outreach efforts by attending community programs, such as health fairs and wellness events.
  • Collaborate with staff to enhance participant engagement and program effectiveness.
  • Adapt to additional therapeutic roles and responsibilities as assigned by the Program or Clinical Supervisor.

III. Supervision & Professional Development

  • Participate in regular clinical supervision and staff meetings.
  • Maintain current licensure, malpractice insurance, and auto insurance documentation annually.
  • Engage in continuing education related to psychosocial oncology.
  • Serve as a CSC-CCC ambassador, increasing community awareness of available support services.
  • Act as a guest speaker for community programs as needed.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Marriage & Family Therapy (AMFT), Clinical Social Work (ACSW), or a related field, actively working toward licensure in California.
  • Good standing with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
  • Strong clinical skills with experience in individual and support group counseling, ideally related to chronic or life-threatening illnesses.
  • At least one year of experience facilitating support groups (oncology-specific experience preferred).
  • Willingness to learn and implement CSC’s psychosocial support model and participate in ongoing supervision.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to speak publicly and engage with diverse audiences.
  • Flexible schedule, including occasional evening or weekend availability.
  • Commitment to teamwork and fostering a supportive community environment.
  • Ability to interact professionally with participants, medical professionals, and the general public.
