Recreation Therapist (DAY & EVENING SHIFT)

Day & Evening Shift / 20 hrs/wk / Potential for flexible weekend as well


Summary of Position: The recreation therapist will be required to evaluate, plan, implement and document according to the CT DPH standards as well as the expectations of the Director. This individual will create therapeutic recreation programs that benefit each resident’s health, functional status and overall quality of life. The individual will be responsible for the successful provision of recreation and leisure in 1:1 sessions, small groups, large groups and house wide facility events. This individual will maintain a diverse calendar of programs to meet the social, emotions, spiritual, cognitive, and physical needs of each individual resident. This individual will need specific experience with programming for residents with dementia.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains adherence to Masonicare Customer Service expectations

  • Develops and implements individualized treatment plans which are age and culturally relevant; and address each resident’s social, emotional, physical, psychological and cognitive status for the residents/patients.

  • Plans and implements 1:1 intervention, small group activities, large groups activities, community trips, special events and entertainment; and motivates residents to participate. Transports residents to/from programs.

  • Completes and maintains documentation standards including assessments, participation records, care plans, notes, MDS, etc.

  • Communicates effectively and tactfully with residents and recognizes their age, cultural diversity, needs, abilities and physical condition. Attends meetings and participates in educational programs and in-services as required.

  • Understands and follows universal precautions and chemicals used in their department.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications: Minimum of TRD certification. CTRS certification through NCTRC is preferred. Dementia specific training and experience is required.

Education/Certification: Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, and/or Certification through NCTRC as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. Minimum Requirement of Associates Degree with TRD certification is required.

Key Competencies: Strong Dementia care background as relates to Therapeutic Recreation. Strong time management skills required. Ability to develop creative programming and enhance the skill sets offered by the Therapeutic Recreation Department is desired. Must be able to operate a computer and maintain electronic medical records. Interest/experience in technology is a plus. Excellent communication skills, knowledge of appropriate TR interventions, strong documentation and organizational skills are required. Ability to be flexible with schedule on occasion to provide programming is required. Must be a team player!
