About the Role:
The Vermont Outdoor Adventure Program (VOAP) Counselor will be part of a team that creates and implements in a Therapeutic Outdoor Adventure/Wilderness Therapy context by providing individual, family, and group counseling through adventure, primarily outdoors, utilizing the natural environment to engage our clients behaviorally, emotionally, and physically. These outdoor adventures will consist of working and guiding between 1 and 8 children, ages 4-18, through various outdoor activities for up to 5 hours a day. This position will support and challenge kids while running team-building games and initiatives, or explorations by way of hiking, biking and canoeing. These outings take place at many different outdoor locations within Rutland County. The VOAP Counselor will develop and maintain close working relationships with internal and external professional staff to provide coordinated, quality services, occasionally supporting school districts, in low ropes course and outdoor education classrooms.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Provide and document direct clinical services to children and their families in Therapeutic Outdoor Adventure settings.
- Develop and lead “year-round” therapeutic outdoor adventure activities.
- Provide clients with mentorship, life-skills modeling, and instruction.
- Create, organize and facilitate a monthly schedule for adventure-based activities and groups.
- Provide and maintain safe, fun, and intentional learning atmosphere for clients.
- Provide clients with basic first aid, medical, and field injury assessment.
- Prepare and maintain equipment for outdoor adventure activities.
- Adhere to all safety and risk management practices specific to each activity.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in human services related field or equivalent in education and experience required.
- Experience leading and guiding outdoor adventure activities strongly preferred.
- Wilderness First Aid Certification, CPR, and CPI required. Can be obtained within 90 days of hire.
- Experience with group process and behavioral management techniques for children and youth.
- Basic understanding of Risk Management process for wilderness settings.
- General knowledge of community resources, standard models of service coordination, experience working in a variety of human service settings.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation with personal automobile liability insurance coverage at or above the levels mandated by the State of Vermont.
- Successful completion of a criminal history background check after hire.
