Job Description:

American International College invites applications for the position of Crisis Counselor at the Dexter Counseling Center. This is an exceptional opportunity to join a dynamic team dedicated to supporting the mental health and well-being of our diverse student body.

The Crisis Counselor provides direct mental health support to students and plays a critical role in responding to student crises on campus. This position reports directly to the Executive Director of Health Services and Student Wellness. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Respond promptly to student mental health crises with real-time, in-person intervention during college business hours or when on-call.
  • Maintain flexible scheduling, including lunch hours, to address urgent student needs and respond to requests from campus partners such as the Dean of Students, Residence Life, and Campus Police.
  • Assess risk and initiate appropriate interventions, including referrals or hospitalization (e.g., Section 12) as needed.
  • Develop and deliver campus-wide training, workshops, and outreach programs on topics such as crisis response, de-escalation, roommate conflict resolution, and mental health awareness.
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential clinical documentation in compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Build and maintain professional referral relationships with off-campus mental health providers, prescribers, and resources.
  • Serve on the College's CARE Team and other committees as assigned.
  • Provide telephone consultation during after-hours for mental health emergencies and report to campus for significant or traumatic events.
  • Work occasional evenings and weekends, including during events such as New Student Orientation and Summer Summit Days.
  • Participate in clinical team meetings, supervision, and ongoing professional development.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned in support of student wellness.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field
  • Independently Licensed in the state of Massachusetts (e.g., LICSW, LMHC)
  • Demonstrated experience in mental health crisis response and working in student affairs or higher education settings
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across campus departments
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond quickly and effectively in high-stress situations

This position is a 9-month full-time role (August - May)
