Summary:
This job requires advanced training in medical genetics and counseling needed to interpret genetic test results, competently review family history, and guide and support patients seeking more information about genetic testing to minimize the risk of disease. The genetic counselor must be able to work with patients who have diverse cultural backgrounds, diverse life experience, education levels, life styles and socioeconomic statuses. Sensitivity and the ability to work with patients confidentially and positively are essential.

Position Reports To:
Practice Manager
Essential Functions:
  • Provide genetic evaluation, counseling, coordination of genetic testing and follow up for patients for a variety of indications, including cancer genetics, cardiogenetics, neurogenetics, connective tissue disorders, dermatologic disorders, autism, and preconception and carrier risks.
  • Referral of patients to appropriate clinics and providers.
  • Assist in patient intake, triage and scheduling.
  • Collaborates and coordinates patient care with other disciplines and medical specialties.
  • Communicates all genetic test results, risk estimates and standard recommendations to patient and any referring physicians.
  • Collaborates with other health care professionals to provide genetic counseling/testing services to patients, when necessary.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in genetics and genomics.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Demonstrate Standards of Behavior and adhere to the Code of Conduct in all aspects of job performance at all times.
Qualifications:
Required:
  • Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling or Human Genetics from a college or university program accredited by the (ACGC) or Master's Degree in clinical or medical genetics prior to the establishment of the ACGC.
  • Certification in genetic counseling by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
  • Current Washington State license for genetic counselor.
