About Job

Family House is the only Teen Shelter in Ulster County, NY. We are seeking Residential Counselors / per diems who want to make a positive difference in the lives of young people. Previous work experience with RHY / at-risk youth is preferred. The hiring for any position at Family House is based on a few factors. For example, whether the applicant's availability is beneficial to the program’s needs and/or how one candidate's experience might fit more than another's.

The Residential Counselor (RC) will play an important part in making youth (12-17 years old) feel welcome, safe, and supported, by demonstrating the following:

  • Serve as a positive role model, maintain professional boundaries, communicate effectively, and remain calm during any unforeseen crisis situation.
  • Help to assist residents with their daily personal tasks. For example, guide the youth to follow the program’s daily schedule, wake up to get to school on time, complete their laundry, organize, and/or clean their rooms. Residents should adhere to specific meal times, participate with motivational / educational workshops, and scheduled activities.
  • Demonstrate excellent decision-making skills, with safety in mind, during indoor and outdoor activities. RC's may transport youth to appointments using the agency vehicle.
  • Remain open to training and learning opportunities.
  • RC’s should be mature, consistent, and work well with a team.

The ideal candidate will be trustworthy and approachable and have the ability to work a flexible schedule. Weekend coverage is needed: Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. An Associate's Degree (minimum) in Human Services and/or relevant and commensurate experience is preferred. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, dependable transportation, a yearly health statement, background clearances from the State Central Registry and the NYS Justice Center, as well as four references (2 professional and 2 personal). Bilingual is helpful but not necessary.
