PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENINGS:
Brenau University will conduct criminal background checks on all persons being considered for initial employment. In some circumstances, an FBI fingerprint report may be necessary to satisfy the requirement. Once employed, employees must hold and continue to maintain a favorable criminal history background. Random background checks are performed. Credit checks may be performed on candidates/employees who are selected for a position that regularly engages in handling credit cards or other company monies. A Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) may be performed during the hiring process, or as part of a random check. MVR checks are required to meet insurance requirements for those employees operating a university vehicle or participating in any driving activity on behalf of Brenau University, (including operating a golf cart, rented vehicle or one’s personal vehicle). Employees who travel must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid Georgia driver’s license, and good driving record. All employees who operate university vehicles, who are employed in a sensitive position, or who travel regularly as part of their job responsibilities may be subject to post-hire drug screening and random drug-screening. All employees are subject to reasonable suspicion drug screening.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education – Must have a minimum of a master’s degree in counseling, social work, or a related mental health field; licensed or license-eligible in the State of Georgia; demonstrated ability to work with college-aged individuals; experience in working with issues common among college students such as substance abuse, mood disorders, sexual abuse/trauma, eating disorders, etc.
  • Experience – Preferred previous experience in a higher education setting. Able to provide counseling for university students, either individually or in groups, for assessment, advisement, crisis intervention, and appropriate referral when needed.
  • Personal Qualities - Strong communication, collaboration, and supervisory skills. Committed to the core values and mission of the University, Student Development & Engagement, and a liberal arts education.
  • Collaboration - Work effectively across all departments to advance the mission of the University and the goals of the department.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provides an immediate/timely response to emergency situations and consultation with faculty and/or staff, as needed.
  • Screens students referred to determine if specialized mental health treatment is required and make appropriate referrals for such treatment. The Counselor clearly understands that supervisors may be informed when referrals have been made without disclosing the substance of the conversations with the student, unless the student is at risk to harming themselves or others under which circumstances additional information will be required.
  • Coordinates ongoing mental health and wellness programming with specific populations and the general student body.
  • Provides direct service (individual and/or group counseling) within an appropriate scope of practice for university students, including assessment, referral, and brief treatment. Generally individual student appointments are limited to three appointments before referral to an outside counselor/agency.
  • Provides advocacy for student issues, as needed and works with other departments on campus to address systemic issues that affect students.
  • Provides after-hours emergency coverage for residential students having a mental health crisis.
  • Provides training, guidance, and support for professional and paraprofessional staff with regard to helping students.
  • Fulfills requirements to maintain licensure status and participates in relevant professional development twice a year.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with other mental health professionals in community to help facilitate the referral process.

Expectations:
  • Collaborates with University administrators, faculty, and staff in the development, implementation, and management of student success initiatives that promote student success and retention.
  • Serves on university-wide committees in support of the Division of Student Development & Engagement.
  • Addresses student concerns and advocate for resolutions.
  • Assists with the assessment, distribution, and evaluation of procedures and policies.
  • Maintains a commitment to the University’s mission and fundamental goals, the division’s mission, and the office’s goals.
  • Promotes and encourages students in responsible self-direction and ethical behavior.
  • Maintains necessary files and documents.
  • Follows established procedures when storing, communicating, releasing, or destroying confidential materials in regards to student information.
  • Maintains a departmental budget and utilizes sound fiscal management.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Student Development & Engagement.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
No supervisory responsibilities required.

Environmental and Working Conditions/Physical Demands and Aptitudes:
Sedentary work. Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must have the ability to travel short distances, and/or drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials. Exerting up to 15 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

Work Hours:
37.5 hours per week. Generally, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hours may be extended or altered to meet the needs of the department or the university. Evening and weekend on-call duty will be required; frequency will depend on the number of persons available to share the rotation of this duty.
Note: This position requires serving in on-call rotations and the potential to respond to after-hours emergencies.

An employee of Brenau University whose communications are privileged or confidential under Federal or State law. The employee’s confidential status, for purposes of this part, is only with respect to information received while the employee is functioning within the scope of their duties to which privilege or confidentiality applies; an employee of Brenau University who Brenau University has designated as confidential under this part for the purpose of providing services to persons related to sex discrimination. If the employee also has a duty not associated with providing those services, the employee’s confidential status is only with respect to information received about sex discrimination in connection with providing those services. Confidential employees are obligated to provide the contact information of the Title IX Coordinator and information about how to make a Complaint of sex discrimination to any person who provides the employee with information about conduct that reasonably may constitute sex discrimination under Title IX or this part. Similarly, when an employee or a student (or a person who has a legal right to act on behalf of a student) informs any employee (including Confidential employees) of the employee’s or student’s pregnancy or related conditions, that Confidential employee must promptly provide that person with the Title IX Coordinator’s contact information and inform that person that the Title IX Coordinator can coordinate specific actions to prevent sex discrimination and ensure the employee’s or student’s equal access to the Recipient’s education program or activity.
