Full Time, Permanent

The Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified Psychiatrist 4 for Washington Corrections Center (WCC) located in Shelton, WA. This is a day shift position that will require work to be completed onsite at the facility.

The mission of Mental Health Services is to provide quality medically necessary mental health care that promotes wellness to incarcerated patients.

This Psychiatrist 4 contributes to the agency's mission by providing quality, timely, medically appropriate psychiatric services (to include assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prescription services) with appropriate electronic and hard copy documentation in accordance with DOC policies and procedures, the clinician's license and job class. This position is an integral part of ensuring quality, safe health services and continuity of care for patients served by DOC Health Services. The Psychiatrist 4 is expected to adhere to the standards for quality psychiatric care defined within professional guidelines, the Washington DOC Health Plan, the DOC formulary and other applicable statewide publications and algorithms

Duties

Provide direct patient services through psychiatric treatment:

  • Review and process records requests of patient medical, dental, and mental health care information within 15 working days or less of receiving following health record procedures.
  • Oversight and patient care for patients assigned at WCC (50%, 0.5 FTE on-site) and MCC (50%, 0.5 FTE telepsychiatry) who require Psychiatry services.
  • Manage caseload assigned by HSM1 or designee.
  • Ensure delivery of quality psychiatric services for all patients Provide timely Psychiatric Assessments.
  • Diagnose psychiatric illness and associated conditions.
  • Identify and prescribe appropriate medications.
  • Ensure all service provision is in accordance with regulatory standards and all DOC policies and procedures to include The Washington DOC Health Plan and the DOC Formulary

Oversight of assigned patient caseload for medication compliance, efficacy and safety:
  • Schedule routine follow-ups to monitor efficacy of treatment strategy, including timely therapeutic medication levels.
  • Ensure that medication orders do not expire.
  • Research and respond to kite concerns about medication reactions or renewal within one working day of receipt.

Meet all documentation required in a timely manner:
  • Provide proper documentation in the patient medical record.
  • Ensure all charting is appropriately filed in a timely manner.
  • Produce timely, clearly written reports and progress notes – these should be clear enough to where another psychiatric provider should be able to understand the plan and seamlessly transition care.
  • Ensure follow-up appointments are scheduled and met within statewide expectations.
  • Research and respond to kites concerning psychiatric symptoms in a timely manner not to exceed one working week – make an appointment or write a response as appropriate.
  • Ensure encounters are turned in or directly entered into the computer system immediately upon completion of appointments.

Be a contributing and supportive team member of the mental health team and the total health services team:
  • Consistent and punctual attendance.
  • Respectful communication.
  • Provide outstanding patient care (patients, peers, health services and facility leadership, custody and classification staff).
  • Respond in a timely manner to requests for assistance, consultation or information.
  • Practice in accordance with DOC Policy and the Washington DOC Health Plan.
  • Participate in formal clinical oversight according to facility and DOC Health Services Clinical Oversight structure.

Other duties as assigned:
  • Promote safety; be an active participant, be aware, be alert, act safely and make recommendations Attend all required training.
  • Remain up to date concerning specific work flow expectations and processes at WCC and MCC.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Initial and continuous unblemished/unrestricted licensure in the State of Washington to practice as a Psychiatrist with either a valid Physician and Surgeon License (MD) or Osteopathic Physician and Surgeon License (OP). Must ensure that license is renewed in accordance with BOP regulations and that proof of current licensure is provided by an anniversary date each year to facility leadership.
  • Maintain current CPR certification and ensure that proof of current status is provided annually to facility leadership.
  • Possess or meet eligible criteria for Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
  • Must maintain CME credits sufficient to maintain license.
  • At least one (1) year experience working as a Psychiatrist.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
  • Board certified in Psychiatry.
  • Experience providing psychiatric treatment in a correctional environment.
  • Experience working within the constraints of a limited health plan and/or formulary restrictions.
