This Rehabilitation Counselor position is located in Shreveport and is responsible for performing casework in a caseload utilizing skills and techniques which enable a person with a disability to successfully interface with his/her total environment in the community and obtaining, maintaining, and advancing in employment.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree plus one year of experience in rehabilitation services, social services, administrative services, therapy services, or nursing; OR

A bachelor’s degree in a rehabilitation field, a social sciences field, social work, education, nursing, health and human services, speech therapy, or business administration; OR

A master's degree.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Schedules interviews to assess functional limitations and vocational potential of possible rehabilitation consumers with Intellectual/developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, visual impairments, epilepsy, spinal cord injuries, personality disorders, traumatic brain injury, hearing impairments, diabetes, orthopedic impairments, etc.
  • Accumulates and interprets general physical, psychological, specialized medical, and vocational evaluations to understand the various aspects of disabilities, including significant consequences, complications, functional problems, transferable skills, and social implications. Determines eligibility for rehabilitation services after reviewing comprehensive medical and psychosocial evaluations.
  • Coordinates consumers' plan of rehabilitation to include agreements providing vocational guidance and counseling, training programs, and other needed services, utilizing available resources to achieve maximum rehabilitation. Maintains knowledge of accommodations/technology to remove or eliminate barriers to employment.
  • Interacts with the consumer to assess his/her needs and problems to determine the best solution vocationally and socially, and assists the consumer with improving interpersonal skills, understanding the labor market, and achieving successful employment. Aids consumers in securing employment consistent with their vocational goal.
  • Provides counseling to consumers, family members, and significant others in relation to the vocational plan, services provided, and the expected outcome. Maintains adequate caseload flow and organization.

Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type: Probational, Job Appointment (open to all qualified applicants), a Promotion (open to all statewide classified and agency-wide permanent status employees), or by Detail to Special Duty. Current permanent status, classified employees may be required to accept a Probational appointment if selected. If filled as a Job Appointment, there is a possibility that this position may be converted to a Probational Appointment should funding become available.

Work Location: Shreveport, LA

Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Rehabilitation Counselor-Entry or Rehabilitation Counselor, at which the vacancy is filled will be determined by the qualifications of the candidate selected. This position is an opportunity to advance within this job series.

Compensation:The actual starting salary depends on the education and experience of the selected applicant.
