As the first Rutgers-Newark special program established to identify talent beyond traditional measures and then recruit, retain and graduate talented young people from the greater Newark area, AFC remains a jewel in the crown of Rutgers- Newark, serving nearly 1500 undergraduate students annually.

Posting Summary
Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Student Counselor II for the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair Scholars Program), a federally funded TRIO program. Reporting to the McNair Project Director, this position aims to increase doctoral degree attainment by students from low-income, first generation, and underrepresented populations in higher education.

This position is responsible for and not limited to the following:
  • Manages a student caseload focused on addressing academic success, research engagement, and graduate school aspirations of McNair participants
  • Offers student support and graduate preparation modules
  • Implements and monitors individual and group participation activities
  • Follows caseload management procedures, makes appropriate contributions to student database systems, and supports programmatic initiatives for McNair students
  • Contributes to the development of a comprehensive support delivery system that addresses academic and personal development needs of McNair students
  • Provides technical knowledge and practical experience in helping students with successful graduate school admissions
  • Develops and conducts group counseling modules, as well as, design, implement and monitor individual and group learning activities such as workshops, courses, and seminars
  • Assists in the completion of the grant required annual performance report
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Requires up to two years relevant experience in an administrative function, good communication and interpersonal skills, and computer literacy.
