.Job Summary:
The School Mental Health Counselor is responsible for providing comprehensive mental health services to students to support their academic achievement, personal and social development, and overall well-being. This role includes direct counseling, crisis intervention, and collaboration with school staff, parents, and external agencies to promote a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide individual and group counseling to students experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges.
- Conduct risk assessments and respond to crises including suicide threats, self-harm, and trauma-related incidents.
- Develop and implement intervention plans, coping strategies, and support systems for students in collaboration with teachers and parents.
- Collaborate with school psychologists, social workers, administrators, and special education staff to coordinate care and ensure student needs are met.
- Conduct screenings and assessments to identify students in need of mental health support.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records in compliance with ethical standards and legal requirements (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.).
- Provide training, workshops, and consultations for staff and parents on topics related to mental health, wellness, and behavioral management.
- Serve as a liaison to community mental health providers and assist families in accessing external support services.
- Participate in school-wide initiatives promoting mental wellness, positive behavior, and inclusive education.
- Advocate for student needs and support diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts within the school community.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
- Valid state licensure or certification as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Social Worker (LSW), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), School Counselor, or equivalent.
- Experience working with children and adolescents in an educational or clinical setting.
- Strong knowledge of child and adolescent development, trauma-informed care, and crisis intervention.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team setting.
- Knowledge of relevant laws, ethics, and best practices in school mental health.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a K–12 school setting.
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities.
- Familiarity with restorative practices, PBIS, or MTSS frameworks.
Salary and Benefits:
Vega Collegiate Academy offers a competitive salary and comprehensive health benefits package. The salary range for this role is $55,000-$90,000
