GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Advocate is responsible for assisting those who have experienced domestic and/or sexual violence, and their children, in AVENUES's 24 hr. shelter program. The Advocate’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to providing services, creating a supportive environment, and interacting with participants, and their children, in a manner that builds on their strengths. This position reports to the Director(s).
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following information is intended to be representative of the essential functions performed by personnel in this position and is not all-inclusive. The omission of a specific task or function will not preclude it from the responsibilities of this position if the work is similar, related or a logical extension of the position. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Answering all shelter calls and determining the type of call and directing it to the appropriate staff or community resource.
2. Complete the Shift Cleaning Procedure and submit to supervisor.
3. Complete and maintain client records as appropriate and/or as assigned as a new employee.
4. Complete 55-hours of domestic and sexual assault advocacy training.
5. Obtain no less than six hours of continuing education as assigned by Director annually.
6. Be prompt and dependable for assigned shifts.
7. Respect the confidentiality of all clients.
8. Assist clients in developing and achieving their own goals.
9. Act as a sounding board for clients, offering options, but supporting the decisions made by the client, supporting individual rights to self-determination.
10. Maintain appropriate professional supportive relationships with clients.
11. Assist clients with completing necessary paperwork, including ex parte orders of protection, as appropriate and/or as assigned.
12. Provide support, information and referrals to community resources based on client needs and decisions.
13. Follow established safety policies and procedures.
14. Attend staff meetings.
15. Provide timely service documents into CAP60 regarding client communication.
16. Advises the Director(s) on a regular basis, on all matters affecting the shelter and clients in shelter.
17. Monitors all functions of the shelter and informs Director(s) of necessary safety hazards, client services, building maintenance issues, security service monitoring (checking who is at the door, etc.) etc.
18. Ensures that adequate controls are in place at the shelter for clients.
19. Attends any relevant training in order to stay up to date on developments within the field.
20. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
21. Providing advocacy-based services to victims of sexual assault & domestic violence.
22. Complete Order of Protections for Marion and Ralls counties.
23. Develop safety plans.
24. Determine short-term and long-term needs and goals for clients.
25. Assist with housing, clothing, household items, social services, transportation, employment and medical referrals.
26. Facilitate educational and supportive weekly meetings for shelter clients.
27. Accepts donations on behalf of AVENUES at the shelter.
28. Assisting with monitoring and conducting donation inventory for shelter
SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS:
This position does not have employment supervisory duties.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $15.00 - $16.00 per hour
