AFTERSCHOOL COUNSELOR JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Afterschool Counselor in Edna, TX

Reports to: Site Director

Branch: Youth Development

Department: Childcare

Position Status: Part-time/Non-exempt

Date: July 10, 2025

POSITION FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Site Director, the counselor will closely supervise a group of school-age children in all scheduled activities. Keep children in safe environments at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Must be 18 years of age.

· High school diploma or equivalent.

· Ability to relate well with children.

· Required to attend 15 hours of training annually as approved by licensing minimum standards.

· Must obtain CPR and First Aid Certification.

· Must agree to Child Abuse Prevention, and pre-service training once employed.

· Must have a current Driver’s License.

· Childcare experience required.

· Background Check required if hired.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Closely supervise a group of children; such supervision will consist of visual and auditory awareness as well as a pattern of circulation among the children.

· Follow pick-up and check-out procedures, discipline policy, roll call, no-show policy, and field trip procedures as outlined in staff training.

· Report any repairs and supply needs to the Site Director.

· Responsible for the safety and well-being of each child at the site.

· Report any illness or injury of a child or staff member to the Site Director immediately following the incident.

· Relate and communicate with school personnel.

· Know and relate all program rules.

· Attend all scheduled staff meetings, training, and any other meetings deemed necessary by the Program Director.

· Assist in set-up and clean-up of daily activities.

· Know how and be able to implement site evacuation /emergency procedures for fire, chemical spill, tornado etc.

· Report any suspected cases of child abuse to the Site Director/Program Director.

· Report to the Site Director regarding all matters concerning job responsibilities.

· Know and abide by the YMCA Standards of Conduct.

Working Conditions and other information:

· When working with children, it is strongly recommended not to wear jewelry.

· Staff shirts and name tags should be worn at all times.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $12.00 per hour
