Grief Counselor

Schedule: Full-time, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM or 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. Includes up to one evening per week to accommodate bereaved requests. Regular evening availability is also required on the second Wednesday of each month.
Minimum Qualifications & Certification/Licensure:
- Bachelor’s degree in Counseling or Social Work required. Master’s degree preferred.
- Licensed in the state of Wisconsin as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or certified or licensed as a social worker (CSW, CAPSW, CISW, or LCSW) by the State of Wisconsin required.
- Previous experience working in the field of grief, loss, and end-of-life preferred.
- Valid WI Drivers’ License, reliable transportation, and proof of current automobile insurance coverage.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
The Grief Counselor has responsibility for providing grief counseling, education, memorializing, and group facilitation to families and caregivers of Unity patients, residents and staff of contracted facilities, community partners (including schools and workplaces), and bereaved community clients.
- Provide grief counseling to Unity patients/families and community clients ranging in age from 4-100.
- Responds to counseling needs as per the plan of care. Documents all interactions with bereaved clients.
- Identifies grief-related issues and makes bereaved clients aware of available resources.
- Develop bereavement plans of care in collaboration with patient care staff
- Facilitate grief groups.
- Maintains program format consistent with the needs of the group.
- Maintains records for the program.
- Identifies needs not appropriate to be met by the group and refers to appropriate resources.
- Provide information on Unity programs and education related to grief and loss.
- Provides public speaking as requested and approved by supervisor.
- Explain the bereavement program to potential clients/families as requested by the supervisor.
- Make referrals to community resources based on client needs.
- Participate in the planning and provision of memorial programs and other Grief Service events.
- Comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations as well as policies and procedures of Unity.
- Satisfy mandatory training requirements regarding local, state, and federal regulations and/or Unity’s policies and procedures.
- Consistently and concisely document activity according to department protocols and standards
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion in business relationships and exercise sound business judgment.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and capable of dealing with deadline pressures.
- Promote and maintain privacy/confidentiality.
- Maintain personal and professional boundaries.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
