Located in an idyllic setting in the northernmost corner of Fairfield County, Connecticut, The Sherman School is a small, PK-8 school with approximately 267 students and 80 dedicated faculty and staff members. We offer small class sizes, and wonderful resources to support our programs.

Position Title: 0.8 FTE Social Worker
This is a grant funded position that is only for the 2025-2026 school year.
Qualifications:
A.) Valid certification issued by the
Connecticut State Department of
Education for the position.
B.) Experience in the field as the Board and
Administration may find appropriate and
acceptable.
Reports to: Director of Student Support Services
Job Goal: To administer and maintain a program of Social Services for The Sherman School.

The successful candidate will:

  • Serve as a liaison between the school and the home in cases referred by school administration.
  • Perform casework service with individual students to correct those personal, social or emotional mal-adjustments related to their educational and social progress.
  • Perform casework service with parents to increase the parents’ understanding, their constructive participation in resolving their child’s problems, and their knowledge and use of appropriate resources available.
  • Consult and collaborate with other school personnel in gathering and giving information on a case, and in establishing and planning for respective roles in the modification of the student’s behavior.
  • Assist the Director of Student Support Services in the placement of all children in special education including those placed outside the school district.
  • Coordinate all cases referred to outside agencies, except those placed in special education.
  • Assist in counseling students and parents.
  • Assist students directly toward adjustment to school.
  • Serve as a resource in developing alternative programming for students who may benefit from it.
  • Assess students’ mental health needs and educational and social emotional functions through clinical interviews, observations, and consultation with teachers, other school staff parents, and/or outside providers working with families.
  • Assist school staff in investigating and helping to solve attendance issues.
  • Attend PPT and 504 meetings on students who have been assigned to the Social Worker and others who may be in need of social services.
  • Provide data and insight to schools’ Planning and Placement Team for specific student needs.
  • Respond to crisis and emergent situations and serve on schools’ Crisis/Emergency Response Team.
  • Regularly communicate with families and outside providers to optimize students’ functioning across all settings.
  • Collect, analyze, maintain, and update social/behavioral data and records.
  • Coordinate the referral of students not enrolled in the Sherman School District (i.e., preschool, foster students, etc.).
  • Fulfill all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Preferred Experiences:

  • Prior experience as a social worker preferred
