JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Elementary School Counselor
REPORTS TO: School Principal
JOB GOAL: To provide a comprehensive counseling and guidance program for elementary school students
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
•Must meet applicable federal and state certification/qualification requirements for
the position
•Master's degree in School Counseling
•Proficiency in oral and written communication skills
•Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and
collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups
•Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to
facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required
reports, correspondence, and/or financial information
•Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999
and Act No. 2002-457
•Such Alternatives to the above qualifications as state, federal and local law and
the Board may require
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and
priorities
2. Implements the elementary school comprehensive counseling and guidance
program curriculum
3. Guides and counsels groups and individual students through the development of
personal, social, educational, and career plans
4. Counsels small groups and individual students
5. Consults and collaborates with teachers, staff, and parents in understanding and
meeting the needs of students
6. Refers students with problems and their parents to appropriate specialists,
special programs, or outside agencies
7. Participates in activities that contribute to the effective operation of the school
8. Plans, evaluates, and revises the counseling and guidance program
9. Pursues professional growth
10. Abides by professional Code of Ethics
11. Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like
directives, as well as state, federal and local laws
12. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s)
