REPORTS TO: Principal
WORK DAYS: 190 + 15 extra days
PAY: We are finishing Licensed bargaining for the 2025-26 school year, which will result in an increase in salaries. Pay for the 2024-25 school year ranges from $45,171.49 to $88,774.53. Placement is dependent on verifiable experience and education level. We also cover your PERS contribution.

Stayton High School, Home of the Eagles, seeks an energetic, dynamic individual who can meet the needs of over 700 diverse students.

Stayton High School is an AVID building that focuses on instructional strategies and providing a careerand college-ready culture for students.
This position, as with all others, is subject to budget approval and adequate funding. In addition to being placed on the licensed salary schedule, high school counselors work an extra 15 paid days beyond the salary listed here.

Goal: To assist students in achieving the greatest educational benefit from scholastic and extra-curricular programs and to help students resolve non-academic and academic problems that may interfere with their educational progress.

Essential Requirements:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements listed represent the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities needed for the position.
  • Master's Degree with a Valid Oregon Counseling License issued through TSPC
  • Coursework/experience in the principles and practices of educational guidance, testing and measurement, psychology of learning, analysis of behavior in attitude change, group dynamics, and physical and mental development of individual child
  • Ability to provide quality counseling for all students referred by teachers, administrators, or parents
  • Ability to facilitate social and emotional growth among students, promoting academic and overall positive school experiences
  • Ability to assure that students have the opportunity to explore, develop, and express themselves intellectually, socially, and emotionally
  • Ability to assist students in solving problems related to home, health, and emotional adjustments
  • Ability to communicate with individuals of varied cultural and educational backgrounds
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with students, parents, staff, and community agencies
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with student, staff, and/or parent information
  • Perform physical requirements, which may include:
  1. Moderate degree of physical and emotional stamina
  2. Frequent standing, walking, and sitting
  3. Frequent and prolonged talking/hearing conversations
  4. Possible exposure to bodily fluids due to student injury and illnesses
  5. Such alternative to the above requirements as the School Board or the Administration may deem appropriate and acceptable.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities (other duties may also be assigned):
  • Assist and implement a guidance program following state and district goals that, as much as possible, meet the individual needs and development of students
  • Direct scheduling of classes for students
  • Supervise the registration, classification, scheduling, and testing of students
  • Participate in parent, teacher, and student conferences as requested and initiate such conferences as needed
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student conduct and support the teaching staff in developing reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedures
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations
  • Participate in the development and implementation of an individualized education program (IEP) as requested
  • Write, implement, and assess individual student action plans for selected students as needed
  • Coordinate student and family needs with appropriate community resources, such as mental health, juvenile department, health department, ESD, DARE, etc.
  • Keep abreast of laws, rules, policies, and trends regarding guidance and counseling
  • Administer appropriate tests to students and coordinate or assist with the building testing program
  • Share responsibility of certifying students for graduation
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions with students, providing academic guidance for students to be on track for high school graduation and their college or career planning
  • Supervise the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications
  • Make recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships
  • Provide student information to colleges and potential employers according to provisions of the Board's policy on student records
  • Coordinate peer helper program
  • Coordinate annual Optimist Report as required
  • Develop/implement programs for pregnant and parenting teens
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as requested
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students, parents, and staff
  • Act as a friendly ambassador of the North Santiam School District
  • Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may be appropriate to the Board or Administration.
