General Definition of Work

The board certified behavior analyst (BCBA), under intermittent supervision, performs highly complex work with limited decision-making discretion providing direct and consultative services to educational professionals and students in school settings. The BCBA will conduct behavioral assessments, interpret results for educational team members, and develop behavior support plans. The position will train and support educational team members in implementing behavior support plans and providing professional development to school site staff, para-educators, and parents/guardians in the use of evidence-based intervention procedures. Employee performs school-based work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the principal.

Essential Functions
  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Provide consultation, intervention, modeling, and support to staff regarding behavior management, effective education, and assessment of behavioral needs of students with and without disabilities
  • Identify and demonstrate teaching strategies that build student skills in targeted areas
  • Conduct functional behavior assessments (FBAs) for students with complex or severe behaviors and analysis to identify function of inappropriate student behavior
  • Develop behavioral intervention plans (BIPs) and individual education program (IEP) goals and objectives based upon the function of the inappropriate behavior, and /or manifestations designing instructional strategies for appropriate replacement behavior
  • Design, monitor, and revise behavior programs for students
  • Oversee the implementation of behavior programs by others
  • Observe staff implementation of behavior programs and provide feedback as needed
  • Work cooperatively with administrators, school psychologists, social workers, and special education teachers in developing FBA/BIP paperwork
  • Develop crisis intervention plans when needed
  • Collaborate to exchange, discuss, and evaluate student information for planning, modifying, and coordinating treatment programs for individual students
  • Facilitate team consultation meetings with school staff
  • Participate in the referral, re-evaluation, and IEP process for students
  • Provide consultation to parents regarding child development and behavior management techniques
  • Develop and deliver professional development and training in behavior management, progress monitoring, data collection techniques, social skills or other targeted needs
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation
  • Participate in professional development workshops and other required training
  • Create an inclusive environment with positive communication
  • Perform related work as assigned or required


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, standards, and expectations of behavior assessment and behavior modification techniques
  • Comprehensive knowledge of how to utilize appropriate data and information to make instructional decisions for students
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of various learning styles, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, behavior assessment, and research related to learning
  • Knowledge of the Individual Education Program (process, strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning)
  • Ability to evaluate staff utilization of behavioral strategies and provide feedback
  • Ability to use research-based techniques in instruction and behavior management
  • Ability to conduct training sessions, present information and orient staff
  • Ability to intervene and manage stressful situations through utilizing appropriate conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums
  • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgement

Education and Experience
  • Master's degree in education, special education, psychology, behavior analysis or a related area required
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst credentials required
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Physical Requirements:

This job requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing. The work requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations. The work often requires bending, squatting, reaching, with the ability to lift, carry, push or pull light weights. Will regularly require physical strength and ability to exert physical effort as needed for crisis intervention or handling objects over 30 pounds. May occasionally require work with risk for potential job-related injury, such as physical confrontations.
