Job Description

The goal of the Genetic Counselor Assistant Internship Program is to provide hands-on experience working in neurogenetics at a tertiary care facility for those actively pursuing a career in genetic counseling or other genetics-related healthcare field. The primary responsibilities are to support clinical and research operations for the genetic counseling service line and other clinicians within the division.

Experience

  • Research area: research experience necessary either through previous internship, work experience, or course work; practical knowledge about the conduct of research principals required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in clinical or non-clinical research

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, health sciences, psychology or other related field.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Ability to function as part of a diverse team of professional in a fast-paced clinical environment including good working relationships with colleagues, subordinates and superiors
  • Strong interest in pursuing graduate level academic training in genetic counseling or other genetics-related healthcare field
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology
  • Good computer skills including working knowledge of a PC and Microsoft Office (Word, Access, and Excel)
  • Self-directed and motivated to work independently toward short- and long-term goals
  • Good communication, organization, and interpersonal skills

Job Responsibilities

  • Administrative support for genetic counseling service line within neurosciences including genetic testing paperwork completion, insurance paperwork follow up, coordinating sample collection, and managing test results
  • Promoting care coordination by collecting records from other institutions
  • Supporting clinical operations for our physicians, APPs, nurses, MAs, and laboratory professionals
  • Research support and coordination including data entry and data collection
  • Maintaining and disseminating department-wide genetic information resources and teaching sheets
  • Other duties and support as assigned
