SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER / STUDENT SUPPORT SPECIALIST

REPORTS TO: Elementary School Principal

PAY TYPE: Contract, Non-Supervisory

PAY RATE: Starting at $45,000; Commensurate with licensing & experience

BENEFITS: Eligible (see attachment)

SCHEDULE: 185 Days; Follows school calendar; 8:15 am to 4:15 pm

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists with mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic and classroom support, consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators, as well as provide individual and group counseling or therapy
  • Functions as a link between the home, school, and community in providing direct and indirect services to students, families, and school personnel to promote and support students’ academic and social success
  • Obtains and coordinates community resources to meet students’ needs
  • Helps the school respond effectively to each child’s needs
  • Provides crisis intervention as-needed
  • Identifies and reports child abuse and neglect
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Elementary School Principal

  • Student Support
  • Promote and maintain a safe, orderly, and respectful school environment aligned with district policies and school expectations
  • Collaborate with teachers and support staff to develop behavior intervention plans and monitor their effectiveness
  • Coordinate McKinney-Vento supports for the school building
  • Help students to develop appropriate social interaction skills, understanding, and accepting themselves and others
  • Attendance Support
  • Collaborate with families, counselors, and outside agencies as-needed to address chronic absenteeism
  • Family & Staff Collaboration
  • Serve as a liaison between home and school to support student behavioral needs
  • Participate in parent-teacher meetings, case conferences, and discussions related to student behavior
  • Collaborate with other student services staff, such as the school counselor, Registered Behavior Technician, district mental health counselor, district engagement specialist, ELL staff, and special education staff
  • Assist teachers with behavior management and providing direct support to staff
  • Provide staff with essential information to better understand factors (cultural, societal, economic, familial, health, etc.) affecting a student’s performance and behavior
  • MTSS and Behavior Support
  • Assist with the implementation and monitoring of behavioral MTSS plans
  • Analyze behavior data to identify trends and guide decision making
  • Participate in problem-solving teams and assist in coordinating Tier 2 and 3 support


JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Education, Training, and Experience Required:
  • Bachelor’s Degree (minimum) in Social Work
  • Master’s Degree (preferred) in Social Work
  • Valid Indiana License in School Social Work or pending licensure (preferred)
  • Previous experience in student and family services or social work
  • Current certification in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention in Schools (TCIS) or willingness to obtain

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Position works indoors in a typical school environment
  • May work near others, often within a few feet
  • May occasionally be exposed to noise levels that are distracting
  • May work shifts outside of normal work day for meetings or other events
