Job Summary
The Therapist is responsible for providing individual, group, and family therapy services to clients in a licensed inpatient substance use disorder (SUD) treatment program. The role is central to the emotional and psychological wellness of the client population, ensuring appropriate therapeutic interventions, timely documentation, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary treatment team. This role adheres to all standards set by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS), DHCS, and TJC.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Provide individual psychotherapy to assigned clients based on treatment needs
- Facilitate therapy and psychoeducation groups using evidence-based practices
- Complete biopsychosocial assessments, treatment plans, and progress notes per DHCS timelines
- Conduct suicide risk assessments and safety planning as clinically indicated
- Support discharge planning, aftercare referrals, and coordination with outside providers
- Participate in weekly treatment team meetings and clinical case conferences
- Collaborate closely with case managers, technicians, and nursing staff to ensure continuity of care
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with families (when authorized) and external agencies
- Maintain documentation in accordance with facility policy and regulatory standards
- Observe and uphold HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and BBS ethics at all times
- Participate in mandatory training, CEUs, and clinical supervision (for pre-licensed staff)
- Respond professionally and promptly to crises or therapeutic needs as they arise
- Report any clinical or ethical concerns to the Clinical Director and Program Director
- Perform additional therapeutic duties as assigned
- Master’s degree in Psychology, Counseling, Marriage & Family Therapy, or Social Work
- Must hold a valid registration or license with the California BBS as an AMFT, APCC, ASW, LMFT, LPCC, or LCSW
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a behavioral health, SUD, or residential setting preferred
- Strong knowledge of SUD treatment, trauma-informed care, and co-occurring disorders
- Must complete TB clearance and pre-employment background screening per facility policy
- Current CPR/First Aid certification (or obtained within 30 days of hire)
- Strong clinical judgment and therapeutic presence
- Group facilitation and individual counseling skills using evidence-based modalities
- Knowledge of DHCS documentation requirements and clinical workflows
- Ability to work within a structured, multi-disciplinary team setting
- Clear and professional communication (verbal and written)
- Ethical integrity, time management, and cultural sensitivity
- Work is performed in a clinical office and residential care environment
- Ability to sit for long periods while conducting therapy and completing documentation
- Must be able to move throughout the facility to attend meetings and respond to client needs
- May be exposed to high-acuity or emotionally challenging client situations
- Must maintain confidentiality, composure, and professionalism at all times
- Adheres to California BBS licensing law, DHCS Title 22, and JCAHO standards
- Maintains active licensure or registration and completes all required CEUs and clinical supervision
- Participates in internal audits, performance evaluations, and annual trainings
- Upholds client confidentiality, ethical standards, and professionalism in every aspect of the role
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $65,000.00 – $70,000.00 per year
