About Job

Duties/Responsibilities:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Implements music or recreational therapy programs based on assessment and individualized program planning, with goal/objective development.
  • Develops and implements programs consistent with the individualized social, emotional, spiritual, mental, physical, and functional needs of each resident according to their care plan.
  • Provides a variety of opportunities for each resident through individual, small group, and large group participation.
  • Develops and performs treatment procedures and techniques for the purpose of achieving high levels of independent functioning for each resident.
  • Responsible for documentation in accordance with current practices.
  • Participates as a positive interdisciplinary team (IDT) member, both while conducting groups and involving other staff as needed, and also when participating in the IDT care plan process.
  • Completes Minimum Data Set (MDS) interviews/assessments.
  • Assists in interviewing, evaluating, developing, and planning the services, which are in conjunction with the overall goals of the resident, and independently carries out services and any part of the assigned program.
  • Plans and implements large events, and community programs, encouraging individual interest and participation to meet goals.
  • Maintain and oversee The Music & Memory Program and equipment; if MT.
  • Supports residents while participating in specified activities that are of therapeutic value and plans and coordinates rehabilitative, educational, and community service programs for the residents.
  • Encourages and stimulates the residents toward improved independence through the Activity Therapy Program services.
  • Prepares area, equipment, and supplies for the daily programs and scheduled special events, along with cleaning of equipment/material as necessary.
  • Observes, reports, and records accurate data consistent with the resident’s plan of care.
  • Maintains all required documentation in an accurate, legible, timely, and concise manner.
  • Attends and participates in interdisciplinary resident care conferences.
  • Attends and participates in Activity Department staff meetings.
  • Observes safety precautions and assumes responsibility for residents’ needs, while residents are in activities or are out within the community.
  • Assists with planning, implementation, and documentation of all community programs.
  • May assist in supervising and training other staff, students, and volunteers.
  • Attends and participates in in-services, educational programs, or conferences as directed.
  • Communicates effectively and maintains a positive attitude when working with team members within the Activity Department and with staff from other departments.
  • Works hours according to assigned work schedule. The hours of work will be assigned consistent with the needs of the residents’ program schedule. Rotating weekends and holidays are required. Much of the work is executed on unit. Over half of the time is on your feet/moving. Sitting time varies.
  • Observes all facility policies and procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Ensures safety on the job for self, residents, and staff by utilizing skills to prevent hazardous conditions and makes recommendations to the Activity Director and administration for effective safety measures in the facility.
  • Transportation requirements: wheelchair, geri-chair, assisting ambulatory residents, and transferring residents.

Desirable Knowledge and Abilities:

Ability to exercise leadership skills. Possesses solid communication skills. Able to work effectively and efficiently as a team player. Displays a positive team attitude. Possesses the physical capability of participating in and conducting approved programs. Background and training to effectively relate to the residents. Knowledge of recreation assessments, development, implementation, and evaluation processes.

Training and Experience:

Graduate of a four-year Music Therapist -Board Certified (MT-BC) or NCTRC accredited program with a bachelor’s degree in music therapy or therapeutic recreation, including completion of required internship and board certification. Possession of a current valid Wisconsin driver’s license.

Previously stated educational requirements aside, in evaluating candidates for this position, the county may consider a combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position.
