Summary

Job Description:

The Staff Psychologist promotes the academic, social, and emotional well-being of students by providing assessment, time-limited individual counseling/psychotherapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, outreach, consultation, referrals for American University students, and participation in rotation of after-hours emergency coverage. The Staff Psychologist also provides training and supervision using an integrative orientation for clinical trainees in a graduate level psychology program (including an APA-accredited internship); and participates in activities throughout the university. The person in this position adheres to all relevant ethical, legal, and professional standards.

Essential Functions

  • Direct Clinical Services
  • Provides direct clinical services, such as individual or group counseling, crisis intervention, intakes, and consultations, in order to assess and address the emotional concerns of students, promote a supportive and knowledgeable community with regard to mental health issues, and facilitate students’ connection to the support or treatment they require.
  • Clinical Training and Supervision
  • Provides clinical training and supervision to graduate student clinicians, including individual or group supervision, seminar presentations.
  • Participates in other activities related to the clinical training programs of the Center, such as trainee selection, orientation, and evaluation.
  • Professional Participation
  • Participates in program development, review and development of policies and procedures, staff meetings and other activities affecting the efficient and effective functioning of the Center.
  • Participates in Center, division, or university committees or task groups. Participates in activities related to university employment, such as HR training and the performance management process.
  • Participates in peer supervision, professional development, or other training to develop and refine professional skills and knowledge.
  • Consultation and Outreach
  • Provides training and outreach programs/services to student groups, staff, faculty, and parents, such as workshops or presentations on topics related to mental health, human development, and counseling center services.
  • Other Duties As Assigned

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Provides direct supervision for Intern Clinicians as assigned.

Position Type/Expected Hours Of Work

  • Full-Time.
  • 35 hours per week.
  • Must be available to provide after-hours emergency coverage as required.

Salary Range

  • $80,000 - $83,000 annually.

Required Education/Experience

  • PhD or Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Education/Experience

  • 3+ years post-license with experience in a college/university counseling center.
  • Clinical supervision of trainees.
  • Understanding of human development and the promotion of healthy growth.
  • Strong professional interest and experience working with a diverse student population including students of color, international students, students with disabilities, and first generation college students.
  • Experience in assessing and intervening with severe or potentially life-threatening psychological conditions.
  • Sophisticated understanding of integrative and psychodynamic theory and experience providing clinical supervision.
  • Experience/interest in providing outreach programming.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Licensed or license-eligible as a Psychologist in the District of Columbia at the time of hire.
