Guiding Steps Psychotherapy, PLLC (hereafter GSP) is seeking candidates for the position of Licensed Mental Health Counselor to work in Albany, New York. Those with Limited Permits are encouraged to apply.

GSP will provide a nurturing environment committed to your personal and professional development. For those pursuing full licensure, GSP’s initial goal is to help you to accumulate your supervised clinical hours for licensure in a manner that is sustainable and supports your self-care as you begin practicing.

In this position you will have an immediate opportunity to begin to work with clients (mix of in-person and telehealth) from a counselor who is leaving to pursue a PhD. This counselor’s caseload primarily consists of queer and/or gender non-conforming clients. With this in mind, candidates must have the competence and desire to work with LGBTQIA+ clients.

GSP will offer a competitive salary and benefits and support specialized training. All routine costs associated with working in a private practice will be covered. This includes professional insurance, rent, and software and technology costs. Hourly or other compensation arrangements may be available.

Professional Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Clinical Director, this position is responsible for the following duties in accordance with professional/ethical standards and requirements covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA):

· Counsel clients individually (with opportunities for group sessions) using experience, knowledge, and techniques to build and sustain therapeutic relationships.

· Assess clients based on review of information they report, DSM V, and assessment tools to develop diagnostic impressions.

· Develop with clients, strategies and plans to empower them to reduce distress, meet challenges, and achieve goals.

· Advocate for clients while assisting them to access services and supporting them during crises.

· Participate in training and education to maintain competence and increase knowledge.

· Use provided software to maintain schedule and client demographics and billing information and to prepare and maintain treatment records, insurance claims, and other reports promptly.

Knowledge and Qualifications

1. Applicants should possess general knowledge of counseling theory and interventions and demonstrate interest and understanding in the following areas:

· Attachment theory and its relevance to human development during the life span and to the therapeutic process.

· The impact of trauma on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual development and related interventions for trauma.

· Cultural influences and the impact of oppression on individuals and groups.

2. Applicant should also meet the following qualifications:

· A master’s degree from a CACREP-accredited institution. Coursework should have focused on counseling or psychology. Applicant must have successfully completed an internship in a clinical setting.

· A full or limited permit issued by The NYS Department of Education.
