JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Counselor (Middle School)
FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Principal
Description: The Middle School Counselor is responsible for providing a comprehensive school counseling program that is preventative in design, developmental in implementation, and supports Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy students in the areas of academic achievement, career and college planning, and personal and social development. He/She also serves as a consultant to educators, families and community partners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Middle School Counselor is responsible for developing, implementing and managing a comprehensive school counseling program to serve the academic, social and career development needs of students enrolled at TJCA. The primary purpose of the comprehensive school counseling program is the support of the instructional and academic goals of TJCA. More specifically, the counselor performs the following in addition to other duties and responsibilities assigned.
  • Classroom Guidance: implements varied guidance classroom programs in cooperation with other teachers.
  • Group Counseling: organizes and implements groups which may focus on interpersonal relation skills, study skills, coping with family issues, new student groups and others as needed.
  • Individual counseling as determined by student need.
  • Informational services: including but not limited to student records, educational opportunities, career awareness, leisure information and personal and social resources.
  • Pupil Appraisal and Record Keeping: maintenance of appropriate academic and personal information, administration and coordination of standardized testing.
  • Consultation Services with teachers, administrators, school personnel and parents when warranted.
  • Parent Conferences: participates in counselor-, teacher-, administrator-initiated conferences.
  • Scheduling and Registration: assists with orientation and scheduling.
  • Community Resource Coordinator: identifies and coordinates community resources and suggest referrals to other professionals and agencies as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Must possess a Master's of Counseling degree and license, or enrolled in a program leading to licensure.
  • Previous experience with middle school age children is preferred.
