Start Date: This role will likely begin on July 1, 2026 for the 2026/2027 school year, but it could begin for the 2025/2026 school year–depending on candidate availability and qualifications. 


General Purpose:The School Counselor serves as a key member of the Upper School Guidance Team to provide a robust counseling program to all students. The School Counselor supports students in academic achievement, planning for college and career readiness, and personal and social development. 


This role is a full-time, exempt, contracted salaried position. 


Key Tasks and Responsibilities: 

Academic Counseling:

  • Manage 4-year academic plans that challenge students and prepare them for college and/or career readiness
  • Monitor student academic progress and organize honor rolls and extra-curricular academic opportunities
  • Identify students at risk for academic, spiritual, or social concerns 
  • Oversee interventions and supports for students on the Guidance caseload
  • Communicate/manage academic probation for students
  • Coordinate home instruction when necessary
  • Maintain accurate and current student records and files
  • Monitor student progress to ensure graduation requirements are fulfilled
  • Partner with the principal and admissions office to audit transcripts of prospective students and support the transition of student records between schools

Social/ Emotional Counseling

  • Intervene and assess the needs of students with emergent personal and psychological issues that affect their performance, behavior, and/or socialization in school
  • Refer students with chronic personal or psychological issues to local mental healthcare providers
  • Liaise as appropriate with outside support services to help students with emotional, personal, or psychological issues
  • Communicate with parents/guardians, faculty, and staff to understand and support students’ social/emotional challenges and needs
  • Maintain case files and reports to track student progress and needs

Course Scheduling:

  • Partner with parents and students to create academically-appropriate schedules for each student
  • Assist with new family/student interviews, placement testing, and schedule creation for new students
  • Update online records and manage course changes, withdrawals, or late entries
  • Register and oversee students taking online courses, dual enrollment courses, and/or internships
  • Collaborate with the guidance team and campus leaders to create and maintain the master schedule

Academic Records:

  • Partner with the guidance team to facilitate report card distribution
  • In collaboration with the guidance team, ensure transcript records are maintained and accessible for alumni

Testing Coordination:

  • With the guidance team, schedule and supervise the administration of standardized tests, including PSAT, MAP, and AP tests
  • Collect, organize, and disseminate testing data to campus leaders as appropriate
  • Coordinate with Educational Support and teachers to provide accommodations and/or modifications for students with Educational Service Plans

Other: 

  • Participate in events and programs such as Orientation, Back to School Nights, Open Houses, Conferences, Graduation, and other student events
  • In collaboration with the principal and administrative support staff, plan and facilitate the annual Awards Night and graduation ceremonies
  • Serve as a mentor group leader for students
  • Other duties as assigned

Education, Training, Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in school counseling (or a related field)
  • Experience working in a high school
  • License/certification as a counselor, social worker, or pupil personnel a plus
  • Experience working in a Christian school a plus
  • Experience working with Veracross as a student information system and scheduling platform a plus

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills–The person in this position is a key representative of the high school, and the role involves regular communication with students, parents, and teachers
  • Discretion to maintain the confidentiality of any sensitive information

  • Ability to work productively as a contributing member of a team and adapt to changes as necessary
  • Strengths in communication and organization


Working Conditions: 

  • This role requires extensive writing and computer work.
  • This role requires movement between buildings, which may include working in outdoor weather conditions. 
  • This role requires frequent exposure to regular levels of student hallway and classroom noise, and it may require a raised voice to be heard in these situations.
