POSITION SUMMARY:
Heal Together Counseling Center is committed to empowering individuals and families affected by mental health and substance use challenges. We provide intensive outpatient, and outpatient behavioral health and addiction treatment services rooted in compassion, and trauma-informed care. We provide multiple levels of ASAM SUD/BHSO care, including recovery housing, education, job training, employment, and other recovery related extensions to the family in for-profit and non-profit environments. The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) plays a key role in delivering group and individual peer support services to clients engaged in recovery. The PSS uses their lived experience to build rapport, inspire hope, and foster a supportive environment that promotes healing and personal growth.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have a valid Kentucky driver’s license.
- Attend and actively participate in all staff meetings and required trainings.
- Understand and comply with all Heal Together Counseling Center policies and procedures.
- Model servant leadership and recovery-oriented principles in all interactions.
- Uphold the highest standards of personal and professional integrity.
- Communicate effectively and respond promptly to verbal and written communication.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of community resources and how to access them.
- Provide individual and group peer support sessions, including APSS-billable services as required.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with agency and regulatory standards.
- Keep all required certifications up to date and attend continuing education annually.
- Educate and coach clients on program guidelines, healthy coping strategies, and recovery planning.
- Perform routine check-ins and accountability contacts with clients as part of ongoing support.
- Track and update client rosters, participation logs, and progress notes.
- Support clients in adhering to their recovery goals and schedules.
- Serve as a liaison between clients and other service providers as needed.
- Collaborate with treatment teams to identify client needs and track progress.
- Support coordination of family engagement activities as appropriate.
- Facilitate evidence-informed peer support groups and structured activities.
- Maintain a positive and safe environment conducive to recovery.
- Provide crisis support and peer mentoring under supervision.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by immediate supervisor.
BACKGROUND/EDUCATION:
- Must hold a current Adult Peer Support Specialist (APSS) certification in Kentucky.
- Minimum of 1 year experience in a peer support or similar recovery-oriented role.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- At least 12 months of experience working with individuals in behavioral health or SUD treatment preferred.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong understanding of HIPAA regulations and confidentiality standards.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and electronic health records (EHR) systems.
- Demonstrated ability to build trusting, supportive relationships with clients.
- Must meet all state and federal requirements for background checks and APSS credentialing.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Physical Demands:
Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds. Frequent movement within office and clinical settings. May include brief periods of walking or standing during outreach or events.
Environmental Conditions:
Work is primarily performed indoors in a community mental health clinic. Occasional participation in outdoor or off-site client activities may expose employee to varying weather conditions.
Mental Demands:
The position requires balancing multiple priorities, working with individuals experiencing emotional distress, and managing documentation and deadlines. Resilience, emotional intelligence, and self-care are essential.
WORK EXPECTATIONS:
- Strong collaboration with team members and respectful client engagement.
- Local travel for client support or community outreach may be required.
- Full-time position, minimum of 40 hours per week.
- Some evening or weekend hours may be necessary depending on client needs or events.
