Position Summary
The Behavioral Health Counselor is responsible for planning and leading therapeutic activities for both individuals and groups. This includes conducting assessments, facilitating counseling sessions, developing treatment plans, and coordinating with community partners. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the continuum of care and experience working in behavioral health and substance use treatment settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group counseling to support client recovery and mental wellness.
- Maintain a client caseload according to program requirements and Maryland state regulations.
- Complete clinical assessments, intake screenings, ASAM evaluations, and biopsychosocial histories.
- Develop and regularly update individualized treatment plans aligned with client goals.
- Document all services and interventions in the client’s electronic health record within 24–72 hours.
- Coordinate with external agencies such as social services, MCOs, hospitals, courts, and prisons.
- Facilitate workshops, family meetings, educational groups, and special program events.
- Attend staff meetings and participate in individual and group clinical supervision.
- Support clients in accessing community resources and planning for discharge and aftercare.
- Participate in program audits, treatment reviews, and make recommendations for length of stay.
Education and Licensure Requirements (Maryland)
- Required: Must hold, at minimum, an Alcohol and Drug Trainee (ADT) certification from the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists.
- Preferred: One of the following active certifications/licensures:
- CSC-AD
- CAC-AD
- LGADC
- LGPC
- LCPC
- LCADC
- LCSW / LICSW
Compensation is based on current licensure level and years of relevant experience. All experience must be within the Human Services field.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum 2 years of experience in behavioral health, substance use treatment, or a human services setting.
- Strong working knowledge of ASAM criteria.
- Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and crisis intervention skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative treatment team.
- Flexibility to participate in occasional special events or weekend activities.
