Posting Summary
Rutgers University-New Brunswick (RU-NB), a nationally ranked research university and member of the Association of American Universities and the Big Ten Academic Alliance, located in New Brunswick, New Jersey, is seeking a Student Counselor.
This position is responsible for and not limited to the following:

  • Advises an assigned load of Rutgers Business School students on major selection and planning, course selection, suggested study plans, policies and procedures of Rutgers Business School and Rutgers - New Brunswick, etc
  • Monitors academic standing and progress towards completion of the Bachelor of Science degree
  • Provides liaison services for students with other university offices as necessary
  • Maintains accurate records and student data for use in various departmental reports
  • Provides advisement, counseling, support to an assigned population of Business School students from registration through graduation
  • Notifies and advises students on academic jeopardy and counsels those contemplating withdrawal from the University
  • Evaluates degree completeness forms to determine student's progress and helps develop a plan for successful completion of program using Degree Navigator and student transcript
  • Maintains and conveys knowledge of RBS academic policies and procedures to effectively advise students regarding their curriculum for six different majors including general education requirements as well as non-RBS students with declared business minors
  • Makes recommendations for new policies and ways to improve current policies
  • Coordinates with registrar and other university offices relating to direct services to students and scheduling
  • Works with Assistant Deans to develop and implement innovative programs to provide outstanding services to students
  • Develops, implements, runs, and evaluates programs and activities related to RBS student college transition, retention, attrition, degree completion progress, student support, and tutoring services
  • Develops liaison relationships with RBS faculty and staff, other university departments, community college personnel, and community partners while assisting with the achievement of all department, college, and university goals

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a bachelor's degree with a minimum of two years of experience in higher education OR aMaster's degree and one year of experience in higher education

  • Must be able to multitask and handle a diverse range of responsibilities
  • Must be professional, courteous, and respectful
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication, public speaking, organizational and planning skills; also, must have excellent interpersonal and computer skills (including data management and assessment)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree preferred with experience at an institution of higher education, preferably working with diverse populations of students
  • A background/education in business, education, higher education, student affairs, etc
Equipment Utilized
  • Proficiency in various computer programs (Office Platform, Accuplacer, RUTADMIN, and Image Now), as well as knowledge of the university audit systems and sources of assistance
