Senior Music Therapist - Rehab Therapies

About Job

The Department of Rehabilitation Therapies at the University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Senior Music Therapist to evaluate and provide quality individual and group-based music therapy services for children, adolescents, and/or adults as part of an individual’s comprehensive inpatient acute hospitalization. The primary coverage area for this position is: pediatric intensive care unit, neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric medical/surgical and hematology/oncology units. Cross coverage areas include adult and pediatric inpatient psychiatry units, psychiatric partial hospitalization programs, and adult inpatient palliative care.

Position Responsibilities

  • Provide quality patient- and family-centered care, including evaluation, treatment planning, and documentation appropriate for patients with complex or specialized needs.
  • Participate in the development of innovative clinical teaching activities to meet the learning needs of staff and students.
  • Exhibit divisional and/or departmental leadership - Serve as a clinical resource and maintain high level of clinical productivity.
  • Participate in clinical research and collaborate on special projects.
  • Assist with setting and accomplishing divisional/departmental goals and assist management as necessary.
  • Develop, implement and expand learning opportunities and skills development for staff and students.
  • Assist in establishing new programs, as well as maintaining and developing current programs.
  • Assist in the administration of the departmental Quality Assurance Program.
  • Participate in the development of service operations, policies and procedures.
  • Perform special projects and tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in a field related to the practice of Music Therapy is required or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • 2 or more years experience as a Music Therapist in an acute care hospital setting with a high degree of understanding and skill in one or more areas of assigned responsibility
  • Demonstrated ability to function as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated clinical education abilities
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills


Certifications Required

  • Current certification with the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) as a Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT- BC)


Desirable Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience facilitating music therapy interventions
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in inpatient psychiatry/behavioral health services
  • Demonstrated experience leading group based music therapy interventions
  • Demonstrated experience with basic counseling skills, behavioral management, treatment of mental illness including anxiety, depression, eating disorder, bipolar disorder, dementia care
  • Demonstrated clinical experience working with children, adolescents, or young adults with complex developmental needs
  • Demonstrated experience within a pediatric intensive care unit and/or neonatal intensive care unit developmental care model
  • Demonstrated experience in palliative care, grief and loss
  • Demonstrated program/service development or quality improvement projects.
