Memphis Mental Health Institute:

Memphis Mental Health Institute (MMHI) is a psychiatric hospital that has been serving the Memphis community since 1962. Hospitalizations are on a voluntary or involuntary basis, or patients can also be referred by the court system for pre-trial evaluations. The hospital offers 2 short-term care units for a total of 55 beds. The mission of Memphis Mental Health Institute is to provide a therapeutic environment centered on compassion and quality care for each individual we serve. It is the vision of MMHI to be recognized for providing person-centered psychiatric care in a therapeutic, supportive, and compassionate environment.

Job Responsibilities:

Under nursing supervision, Psychiatric Technicians at Memphis Mental Health Institute (MMHI) provide direct care to patients in Short Term Care Programs; Extended Care Programs; and, Forensic Care Programs for those who have been diagnosed with a mental illness and have forensic charges. Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Providing daily living care for patients such as bathing and personal hygiene; assisting with dressing (clothes); and, feeding.
  • Having the ability to move, lift, and/or transfer patients using sliding boards, wheel chairs, or other required equipment; as well as provide supervised medical assistance, such as, but not limited to, obtaining vital signs and weights of patients.
  • Escorting patients to appointments and other appropriate areas; and, they provide individualized teaching and lead activities for patients.
  • Making rounds according to policy and procedure to account for each assigned patient.
  • Providing verbal de-escalation of agitated patients
  • Performing CPR and other emergency responses and techniques when necessary. All necessary training including CPR and Patient De-escalation will be provided on-site.

Shifts Available:

Psychiatric Technicians work 12.5 hour shifts - 3 - 4 Days/ Nights per Week. Standard shifts are:

  • 6:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. (Days)
  • 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 a.m. (Nights) - Additional Pay for Night Shift Work

Required Education:

  • Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

  • A valid motor vehicle operator license may be required.
  • Must have the ability to lift 30 – 50 lbs. and perform repetitive tasks consisting of bending, stooping, standing and walking.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Mental Health and/or Corrections experience

Base Salary:

  • Annual: $21,792 ($1816 per Month)
  • Overtime is available
