Job Description:
The Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) provides mental health services to clients, which may include inmates in a correctional facility or individuals and families in a community health setting. The role involves conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, and delivering individual, group, and family therapy to address mental and emotional disorders within the context of family systems. The LMFT works independently or collaboratively with other mental health professionals to support client well-being and rehabilitation.
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Assessments: Conduct biopsychosocial evaluations to assess clients’ mental, emotional, and behavioral health needs, utilizing validated tools and methods to diagnose and inform treatment plans.
- Therapy Services: Provide evidence-based psychotherapy, including individual, group, and family therapy, using techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy, or family systems therapy.
- Treatment Planning: Develop individualized treatment plans (IAPs) within 30 days of initial client contact, addressing specific psychological, social, and relational needs in a measurable and objective manner.
- Crisis Intervention: Respond to mental health crises, including suicide risk assessments, and provide immediate therapeutic support as needed.
- Case Management: Coordinate care with internal and external resources, including psychiatric providers, medical teams, and community services, to ensure comprehensive client support.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and confidential client records, including progress notes, treatment goals, and significant milestones, in compliance with HIPAA and state regulations.
- Supervision and Collaboration: Participate in reflective supervision meetings (if applicable) to discuss challenges and develop effective therapeutic strategies. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to enhance client outcomes.
- Community Re-Entry Support: In correctional settings, assist clients with re-entry planning to support successful reintegration into the community.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Education: Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, Counseling, or a related mental health field from a program accredited by COAMFTE, CACREP, or MPCAC.
- Licensure: Active and valid Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) license issued by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). Candidates must maintain licensure as a condition of employment.
- Experience: Minimum of 3+ years of experiences as Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist is needed.
- Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in evidence-based therapeutic techniques (e.g., CBT, motivational interviewing, relapse prevention).
- Ability to work independently with strong decision-making and crisis management skills.
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and basic office software (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets).
- Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish) is preferred but not required.
- Certifications: Additional certifications in areas such as trauma-informed care or substance abuse counseling are a plus.
- Other Requirements:
- Valid California driver’s license and reliable transportation (if driving is required).
- Ability to pass a background check, particularly for correctional facility positions.
- Willingness to work in a high-security environment (if applicable).
