TITLE: AT-RISK STUDENT COUNSELOR


QUALIFICATIONS:
As set by state certification authorities and/or North Central Association; School Counselor Certification


REPORTS TO:
Principal and/or Assistant Principal


JOB GOAL:
To help students overcome problems that impede learning and assist them in making educational, occupational and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature, responsible men and women.


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and work with students in evolving educational and occupational plans in terms of such evaluation.
  • Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment.
  • Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the guidance department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.
  • Recognizes student needs, and refers, when appropriate, to the persons who can best help with their problems.
  • Works with staff to prevent students from dropping out of school.
  • Encourages students to participate in school and community activities.
  • Registers students to the school and orients them to school procedures and the school's varied opportunities for learning.
  • Confers with parents when necessary.
  • Makes recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships, and provides student information to colleges and potential employers upon student and/or parent request.
  • Provides for his own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.
  • Assisting students in course selection, scheduling, and schedule changes.
  • Procuring and distributing applications for college admissions tests, and other testing when appropriate.
  • Coordinating with each other to assist the orderly transition of students from Middle School to High School.
  • Development of the master schedule of classes.
  • Coordinating all phases of student financial aid programs.
  • Maintaining and updating credit checks on all students.
  • Coordinating correspondence course selection and enrollment, and supervising the examinations.
  • Maintaining student records and protecting their confidentiality.
  • Assisting in referral and placement of students with special needs.
  • Any other duties assigned by the principal or assistant principals.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • 199 day contract
  • Salary Range: Counselor: + $1850 Stipend
  • Placement on the salary schedule is based on the degree and length of experience directly related to this position. Successful candidates with more than 10 years experience may be eligible for placement beyond the 10 steps depicted in this job posting.


EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
