Job Description

Tour 2 - 9:00 A.M – 5:00 P.M

Summary Of Duties And Responsbilities

  • Provides breastfeeding support services and health education to WIC Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.
  • Encourages exclusive breastfeeding and offers support by maintaining contact.
  • Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, in clinic and hospital visits at scheduled intervals as determined by the WIC Program.
  • Assist mothers with common breastfeeding problems and concerns.
  • Keeps information confidential.
  • Makes notes in NYWIC chart for participant when contact is made.
  • Assist Breastfeeding Coordinator in prenatal and breastfeeding support groups.
  • Counsels on the various food packages available to breastfeeding families.
  • Counsels on using and assembling breast pumps.
  • Attends breastfeeding education trainings and conferences.
  • Attends hospital-wide meetings and trainings as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Assignment Level I

For Assignments In Mental Health

  • Satisfactory and documented completion of a formalized Peer Counselor/Specialist Training Program; and
  • Certification as a Peer Specialist (NYCPS) issued by the Peer Specialist Certification Board.

For Assignments In Substance Use

  • Certification as a Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) issued by the New York Certification Board.

For All Other Assignments

  • A High school diploma or its educational equivalent; and
  • Satisfactory and documented completion of a formalized Peer Counselor/Specialist Training Program; or
  • One (1) year of full-time satisfactory experience working with consumers of mental health services as a peer

counselor/specialist, peer advocate or in related human services.
