Position Summary: Under the direction of the Chief Behavioral Health Officer, the Licensed Clinical Psychologist is responsible for performing psychological assessments and providing brief evidence-based treatment using the primary care behavioral health model to adults, older adults, children, and their families in a primary care setting. This licensed psychologist works closely with primary care providers to develop and implement sound treatment plans. Responds to and provides crisis intervention services when needed. Ensures behavioral health services are delivered in a culturally appropriate manner, compliant with California laws and regulations, professional standards of care, agency guidelines, and ethical guidelines.
Essential Functions of the Job:
- Evaluates/triages and provides evidence-based, brief psychological/behavioral health interventions to patients with physical health, mental health, and/or substance abuse diagnoses.
- Provides consultation to clinical staff and primary care providers based on the Primary Care Behavioral Health Consultation model, including timely feedback regarding care, treatment recommendations, and progress documentation.
- Performs brief assessments of patient needs and, with the patient and primary care clinician, develops a negotiated care plan.
- Maintains accurate and timely documentation in electronic medical records and produces evaluation/treatment reports as needed.
- Evaluates and revises care plans as indicated, documenting updates in progress notes and communicating with relevant team members.
- Performs crisis interventions, including suicide assessments, and makes recommendations to medical providers and patients; determines if crisis response services are appropriate for patient safety.
- Works with the Chief Behavioral Health Officer/Director to inform healthcare providers about mental health issues in the medical setting.
- Assists in implementing and administering the ESBIRT program for substance abuse prevention and treatment.
- Participates in meetings such as weekly multidisciplinary case conferences, case reviews, and chart reviews; serves on committees as directed.
- Maintains productivity expectations according to clinic guidelines.
- Performs triage, assessment, and stabilization in crisis situations via telephone, mobile crisis, and clinic-based services.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follows departmental and health center policies, quality assurance, safety, and infection control standards.
- Organizes, prioritizes, and exercises independent judgment within responsibilities.
- Works with underserved communities in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Maintains contact with community resources for continuity of care.
- Builds effective relationships with clients, families, staff, and the public.
- Seeks guidance from supervisors when necessary.
- Engages in professional development activities.
- Provides outpatient services on school campuses and satellite clinics as requested.
- Supervises interns and unlicensed staff as appropriate.
- Collaborates with providers for integrated team-based care.
- Conducts trainings and presentations on behavioral health topics.
- Supports development of SBIRT training models for primary care teams.
- Ensures progress toward contract goals and compliance.
- Performs other duties as requested or assigned by supervisor.
Job Requirements:
Experience: At least 2 years in community health/mental health preferred; experience in behavioral medicine/health psychology is a plus. Sensitive to multicultural concerns and the psychotherapeutic process.
Education: Ph.D./Psy.D. in Psychology or equivalent from an accredited institution.
Licenses: PsyD/PhD issued by the state of California.
Skills: Bilingual English/Spanish; excellent communication skills; knowledge of behavioral medicine, substance abuse interventions, and culturally sensitive practices. Proficient in MS Office.
Working Conditions: Office environment; frequent sitting, occasional standing, walking; may drive within San Diego County; physical ability to lift up to 10 lbs.
