Job Summary:
The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the shop, ensuring the timely and efficient maintenance and repair of heavy equipment and diesel trucks. This leadership role requires a seasoned professional with a strong background in diesel mechanics, proven management skills, and a commitment to safety, productivity, and continuous improvement.
Essential Functions:
1. Ownership and Caring: Lead and manage a team of technicians, ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with company policies and quality standards. Promote a culture of accountability and pride in workmanship.
2. Compulsive Tinkering: Provide advanced technical support in diagnosing and repairing heavy equipment, including bulldozers, excavators, loaders, and diesel trucks, as needed to support team performance.
3. Focused: Ensure regular inspections and preventive maintenance schedules are carried out effectively to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
4. Measurement: Manage parts and materials inventory, oversee procurement processes, and maintain optimal stock levels to support timely repairs and minimize delays.
5. Results Matter: Recruit, train, and mentor technicians, fostering growth and continuous learning within the team. Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.
6. Committed to Serve: Maintain accurate and up-to-date service records, work orders, and maintenance logs to ensure regulatory compliance and operational transparency.
7. Respect and Engage: Work cross-functionally with operations, dispatch, and safety teams to prioritize shop work and support field readiness, ensuring equipment availability aligns with project demands.

Requirements, Education and Experience:
1. High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Diesel Technology, Business Management, or a related field strongly preferred.
2. Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive experience in diesel mechanics and heavy equipment maintenance, including at least 3–5 years in a managerial or senior supervisory role within a shop or fleet maintenance environment.
3. Demonstrated experience overseeing teams, managing workflow, and aligning shop operations with business priorities.
4. Deep knowledge of heavy equipment systems, diagnostics, and repair techniques.
5. Proficient in using diagnostic and shop management software.
6. Experience managing maintenance schedules, parts procurement, and vendor relationships.
7. Strong leadership capabilities with a proven ability to manage budgets, labor planning, inventory controls, and performance metrics.
8. Track record of mentoring teams, leading through change, and driving continuous improvement.
9. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments including operations, safety, procurement, and finance.
10. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
11. Willingness to work flexible hours or weekends when operationally required.
12. Authorized to work in the U.S.

Travel:
Position may require up to 5% travel by personal vehicle to offices throughout the state of New York, and New England based on the needs of the business.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
This position requires the ability to stand, walk and lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs. or more for extended periods. It also involves working in a shop environment with exposure to various weather conditions and loud noises. Candidates must have sufficient physical strength, visual and auditory acuity, and precise hand-eye coordination for handling tools, equipment, and small components during repairs and maintenance tasks. Other manual tasks include bending, stooping, reaching, and climbing onto platforms and ladders, while adhering to safety protocols.
