Position Purpose:

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) specializing in Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and medication management plays a critical role in the integrated care team at K&I Healthcare Services. This position is responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating clients with psychiatric conditions, with a focus on substance use and co-occurring disorders. The PMHNP will prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, including those used for medication-assisted treatment (MAT) such as Suboxone or Vivitrol, in accordance with state and federal guidelines. In addition to providing direct psychiatric care, the PMHNP collaborates with therapists, case managers, and other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive, person-centered treatment plans that support recovery and long-term stability. Administrative work directly associated with client services—such as documentation, coordination, and follow-up—is compensated within the fee-for-service rate. This position ensures that all medical services align with ethical, clinical, and regulatory standards while promoting long-term recovery.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Medical Director, the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, is responsible for the following:

  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments and diagnostic evaluations.
  • Assess the mental, emotional, and behavioral health of individuals and their family systems.
  • Diagnose psychiatric conditions and formulate treatment plans based on evidence-based best practices.
  • Prescribe and manage psychiatric medications, including Suboxone and Vivitrol.
  • Educate patients on medications, including benefits, potential side effects, and risks of non-adherence.
  • Provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and monitor client progress regularly.
  • Maintain clinical documentation in compliance with OMHC, state, and federal regulations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to ensure continuity of care and integrated service delivery.
  • Monitor and address medical aspects of quality management and care outcomes.
  • Facilitate care coordination and referral between behavioral health and primary care systems.
  • Engage in ongoing communication with therapists and case managers.
  • Participate in clinical meetings, supervision, and case conferences as required.
  • Carry out related administrative tasks tied to patient care, including treatment planning and follow-up communication.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Administrative Expectations & Compensation Clarification:

  • All administrative tasks directly tied to client care (e.g., treatment planning, session documentation, inter-provider communication) are included within the fee-for-service reimbursement rate.
  • Non-billable administrative activities unrelated to specific client services may not be compensated unless previously authorized.

Required Education and Licensing:

  • Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing with specialization in Psychiatry mental-health nurse practitioner program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) (formerly NLNAC | National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission).
  • Current licensure in Maryland as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).
  • DEA registration and eligibility to prescribe controlled substances, including MAT.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions preferred.
  • Knowledge of DSM diagnoses a variety of therapeutic modalities and interventions, and mental health-related evidence-based practices
  • Knowledge of resources targeted towards the health of adults, children, youth and families
  • 2+ years’ experience as an RN; 3 years’ experience as a psychiatric nurse practitioner
  • Familiarity with OMHC standards, COMAR regulations, and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Respect for and adherence to client confidentiality and HIPAA compliance
  • Healthy boundaries with staff and clients.
  • Ability to communicate with compassion and empathy.
  • Communicating effectively, speaking multiple languages is preferred.
  • HIPAA training required within 30 days of hire
  • Ability to work well independently and collaboratively
  • CPR/First Aid Certification Preferred (or willing to obtain within first 6 months of hire)

Compensation:

This is a fee-for-service, non-exempt, W-2 position.

  • Compensation is based on the number of completed billable services provided each week.
  • Reimbursement Rate: Competitive per-session or per-service rates, which include time for documentation and care coordination directly related to each session.
  • New Evaluation- Fee for Service Rate- $70
  • Follow up Session-Fee for Service Rate- $60
  • Additional compensation or stipends may be available for on-call coverage or medication-assisted treatment duties (e.g., Suboxone/Vivitrol administration).
  • This position is eligible for benefits (if applicable per organizational policy and minimum weekly service thresholds for part time or full time).

Weekly Schedule: (Full – Time Status & Weekly Schedule Requirements)

Employment Type: Full-Time | Fee-for-Service | W-2 | Non-Exempt

Work Schedule: Flexible within clinic operating hours of 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Providers are expected to schedule and complete their fee-for-service sessions and related administrative work during these hours unless otherwise approved by clinical leadership. No fixed lunch break is required unless working more than 6 consecutive hours in a day.

To maintain full-time status and ensure compliance with FLSA guidelines for non-exempt fee-for-service employees:

  • Complete a minimum of 25–30 billable sessions per week,

OR

  • Maintain at least 30 total hours and no more than 40 total hours per week, inclusive of all direct client care and associated administrative work (e.g., documentation, follow-up, treatment planning).

Physical Requirements

The position requires clear and articulate speech and ability to hear. Required to sit and stand for long periods of time, as well as reading and typing on the computer.
