Qualification Requirements:
Recreation Therapists assigned to Correctional Facilities must have the minimum experience/education as follows: Minimum of thirty-six (36) continuous months of experience within the last five (5) years performing services similar in scope to those defined herein in a public or private institution.
Internship does not count towards the required experience.
All Recreation Therapists must have the required licenses, permits, and/or certifications noted herein.
Patient-Inmate/Youth healthcare is of paramount importance. Accuracy in communications is critical to ensure timely, competent care is provided. Therefore, any Recreation Therapist providing services through this Agreement must be proficient in the English language and be able to communicate effectively with Correctional Facilities.
All Recreation Therapists must be able to speak and understand oral and written communication. Accurate and effective writing in English is also required.
Any Recreation Therapist who fails to meet the minimum qualifications shall not be permitted to perform services.
The Institution’s/Facility’s CEO/CMH/CMO or designee shall state in writing the reason(s) for the Recreation Therapist not having met the minimum qualifications.
This statement will be submitted to the Vendor Manager and the Correctional Facilities, Medical Contracts, Contracts Management Team.
Education must be equivalent to graduation from an accredited and/or recognized college with the major work in therapeutic recreation, or in recreation with an emphasis in therapeutic recreation.
The major must have included supervised fieldwork approved by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) or the California Board of Recreation and Park Certification (CBRPC).
Service Delivery Requirements
Under the direction of the Institution’s/Facility’s CEO/CMH/CMO or designee, Recreation Therapist’s duties/responsibilities shall include, but are not limited to, the following requirements:
- Develop and implement specialized recreation therapy services to Correctional Facilities Patient-Inmates and/or DJJ Youth. Such therapeutic interventions are designed to promote social interaction, encourage beneficial and appropriate utilization of leisure time, and provide Patient-Inmates and/or DJJ Youth with preparation for reentry into general population or other levels of treatment.
- Participate in the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team (IDTT) and coordinate services with primary clinicians, correctional counselors, and other custody personnel.
- Evaluate recreation therapy needs for Patients-Inmates and/or DJJ Youth.
