Hours: Full-time – 37.5 hours per week (The work hours vary and include day, evening, and night shifts. The position also includes some weekend and holiday shifts.)

Position Summary

The Residential Technician functions as part of the clinical team in a recovery-oriented treatment setting. Staff provide the necessary supports to individuals who are working toward recovery from substance abuse and/or mental health symptoms. The Residential Technician monitors an adult residential environment by providing supervision to individuals, therapeutic activities, accurate documentation, and crisis management.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma / GED
  • No professional experience required – an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is required.   Prefer one year of relevant experience with the assigned client population.

  • Ability to use independent discretion for the purpose of representing the organization in public and private settings.
  • Ability to work productively and accomplish program and individual goals with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to record data accurately within established expectations and by communicated deadlines.
  • Ability to locate and interpret facts and make decisions based on established procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to respond effectively to changes in the work environment in a positive and professional manner.
  • Ability to identify triggers and effectively de-escalate crisis situations.
  • Ability to work in and maintain appropriate personal and clinical boundaries.
  • Willing and available to work modified schedules (weekends, holidays, etc.) as required.
  • Ability to drive and must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license. May be called upon to travel to any Horizon worksite, transport clients, provide services to clients at other locations. Regular attendance at trainings and Horizon meetings may require travel to a variety of Horizon sites.
  • Ability to participate in and successfully pass behavioral intervention training: includes both verbal de-escalation skills and physical skills techniques to be utilized with consumers as needed.
  • Knowledge of substance abuse, mental health, and co-occurring conditions.
  • Knowledge of Horizon’s quality care standards to ensure service delivery supports Horizon’s mission and values.
  • Knowledge of electronic health records and documentation standards as required by the program.
  • Knowledge of detoxification and crisis stabilization techniques, and potential side effects.
  • Skill to operate a computer; utilize an electronic health record, electronic timesheet, and other software/systems used by Horizon.
  • Skill to utilize personal protective equipment in a manner that is compliant with standard precautions and safety expectations.
