Position Title: School Social Worker

Buildings: Rockford Christian School

Contract: .4 FTE

Reports to: Executive Director of Student Support Services

Coordinates with: Administrative Team, Teachers, and Staff

POSITION SUMMARY

The school social worker assists students with academic learning by providing strategic services that identify and address the social-emotional-environmental issues that interfere with the educational process. Working with parents/guardians, teachers, school principals, and community-based resources, the school social worker implements strategies that promote students’ positive school adjustment.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identifies and assesses educational problems through psychosocial analysis of factors impinging on student adjustment (includes factors in the home, school, and community).
  • Serves as a liaison between families and school to positively promote collaboration in educational planning for students, including encouraging parent/guardian participation in the school setting.
  • Collaborates with school staff, parents, and other school system personnel in identifying strategies to promote student learning and helping to facilitate implementation.
  • Participates as a member of the School Intervention Team and other school-based teams to develop interventions and supports which promote students’ educational success.
  • Provides crisis intervention services in partnership with the building principal.
  • Provides staff consultation on behavioral-emotional-environmental issues affecting student participation in the learning process.
  • Conducts classroom meetings, psycho-education social skills groups, and classroom presentations.
  • Provides social work support services through individual and group sessions to address emotional and behavioral functioning in the classroom (not intended as intensive therapy).
  • Maintains required records and appropriate documentation.
  • Completes risk assessments, functional behavior assessments, and classroom observations on identified students
  • Connects students with community services and develops relationships with counselors/therapists
  • Fulfills professional responsibilities such as maintaining confidentiality, following ethical and legal guidelines, attending inservice and staff meetings, pursuing professional growth and performing job duties in an organized, accurate, timely and dependable manner
  • Provides leadership to the building leadership team in developing and implementing school-wide procedures contributing to a safe and orderly learning environment

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master of Social Work degree including a minimum of 500 clock hours of supervised social work practicum experience
  • Valid Michigan Social Work License
  • School Social Work Certification or graduate level course(s) pertaining to school social work
  • Candidates with Counseling Degree and appropriate experience may be considered
  • Demonstration of knowledge/competence in the following areas:
  • Child psychopathology
  • Diagnosis, assessment and testing
  • Educational disabilities and their impact on children and families
  • Practice of social work in educational settings
