Budget Title: Academic Advisor (SL-3)

Salary: $55,500 - $60,000

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at Binghamton University has empowered students since 1968 by providing access, advocacy, and academic opportunity to high-potential students from historically underserved communities. EOP supports students from admission through graduation with intentional services that foster student belonging, academic excellence, leadership, and lifelong success.

The EOP Counselor serves as a key advocate and advisor, providing direct services to a caseload of undergraduate student leaders on their path toward a Binghamton University degree. The counselor meets regularly with students to assess needs, offer support, and develop individualized success plans that encompass academic advising, financial literacy, personal development, and career exploration. Together, the student and counselor collaborate on a tailored plan to achieve academic and personal goals, extending beyond graduation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and proactively engage in a holistic and in-depth counseling relationship with EOP students and provide academic, career, financial and personal guidance, both individually and in group settings
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive counseling records and assist the Director by providing information to complete state and local mandated reports
  • Participate in summer orientation program for freshman and transfer students by providing advisement and counseling to EOP students
  • Support transition and retention initiatives, as well as programming in the Academic Success Network
  • Facilitate workshops or small groups related to student development
  • Participate in EOP counselor meetings and campus advising meetings that pertain to issues pertinent to the success of EOP students, ensuring best practices that reflect changing policies for Binghamton, SUNY and nationally
  • Participate on various University committees that provide the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and staff
  • Perform all aforementioned duties and responsibilities while conducting one's self in a manner that is beneficial to the mission of EOP

The successful candidate should:

  • Demonstrate the ability to foster interpersonal relations and the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with a diverse group of individuals, including faculty, staff, students
  • Demonstrate commitment to equity, student advocacy, and educational access
  • Demonstrate ability to exercise sound judgement, handle confidential matters with tact and a high degree of discretion
  • Possess interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Experience supporting, engaging and advocating for a diverse population of students in a college or university setting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or related field
  • Experience working with Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP) or similar student success initiatives
